Real 'hope' for the entertainment industry, possible early demise, psychological issues... and all the while wild Asian elephants disappear.
Whipsnade Zoo has announced the birth of an endangered Asian elephant, calling it “real hope for the future”. But for Born Free, this is no cause for celebration. Another calf born into captivity reminds us of Pole Pole, who died at London Zoo in 1983.

Returning from @FreeBunka. Sad to leave him. In summary:
No enrichment in enclosure
No sand mound to rest on
Only saw hay in feeder
Dirty water pool
No sign of enlargement of enclosure as promised for 10 years.

@FreeBunka's life. Inside hammering at his feeder and the door. It's sunny but he comes out for 3-4minutes and Ambleside around and goes back inside to smash at the feeder @YerevanZoo

Bunka's dungeon. Still no bedding or mound for him to sleep on thus condemning him to wander around all night or sleep standing up. We urged them in 2023 to address this. They chose to make him suffer. @FreeBunka

A supporter in Yerevan sent us some images of @FreeBunka last week. His enclosure remains unstimulating. And alone now for 11 years. Nothing to do, nowhere to go. Friends of Bunka will be visiting him soon.

Bunka’s night pen looks more like a jail cell than a home. Bare concrete, metal bars, harsh lights, no enrichment or comfort. Cold concrete! nothing but darkness so many years this is where an intelligent, social elephant spends his nights alone. 🐘
