"Shooting game never die." - Yotsubane "Fighting game is something so great." - Tokido To me these are the same quote, and they are both so fundamentally beautiful.

But there's MANY cases where this is true in all the classic action games. Bombs in shmups. Ninpo in Ninja Gaiden. Rockets in RE4. Health for special moves in Final Fight and SoR. Super meter in fighting games. MP and spells in RPGs. Resource management isn't a Game Design Sin.
Go ahead and set that resource/meter to infinite. Does the game still have an engaging dynamic? Or does it become unbalanced? If the answer is the latter, turn back, you are sinning and probably making a bad action game

Hell, this actually describes Ultimate Technique as it already exists in 3D Ninja Gaiden. Extremely spammable invincible move that runs on a basically-negligible resource. Trivializes many encounters. But I guess UT is a "you control the buttons you press" move.

The Fire Scramble stage in Gradius III is a real interesting case study in Games Being Designed Around Lag. By default the level is super, unreactably fast, you can dodge all those flying meteors. So you shoot them to lag the game... but now there's x10 as many bullets to dodge

Level ends up being a strange balancing act between firing to lag the game, but also creating more difficult bullet spreads, vs holding your fire and dealing with much simpler but way FASTER bullets.

I believe 'Ming Kong No. 26' (眠港26号) the chicken item being able to reproduce a chick is well known by a majority of MS fans. But did you also know that the chicks are programmed to follow players, as well as any hostile or neutral NPC, as if it were their parent?

I legit think a lot about how there's no "correct" view for anything. So much of the way game's look comes down to the display's settings, including old CRT games. Both the color brightness, sharpness and ingame gamma settings dramatically change how a game looks.
RIGHT NOW I’ve seen a heartbreaking number of bright Thief screenshots, and the sad thing is I can’t even blame these people because they probably have LCD monitors that Thief wasn’t designed for. You need a CRT or OLED to really let the game be as dark as it is wants

There’s a part in the book White Noise where the characters talk about losing their identity once they’ve aged out of being the primary demo for advertisements and marketing.I think about that every time I see nostalgia porn videos because they’re always just ads for old products
It's rare that AI video makes me feel any emotion. But these "nostalgiamaxxing videos" really do capture what it's like to grow up in the 90's Credit: homeforchristmasofficial

the first entry in this series gameplay wise was about level exploration and using space in creative ways to make interesting and engaging encounters out of relatively simple enemies yet the most creative soulslikes can ever get is "lets add a parry"
To me almost every new soulslike falls flat, because it feels like the devs are focusing on the wrong things and that is extremely elaborate, ultra difficulty boss fights. Sure DS1 was sorta difficult, but to me it was more about the exploration. That's where it absolutely shone

The fucking LTG "RUR RUR" clip is fucking hilarious but what kills me even more is how fucking random it is like genuinely why did he do that man?😭

This has led me down an extremely confusing road in which I have learned that open ocean octopi that fold their body into nautilus shapes were known to the greeks and named 'argonauts' BY them, and the nautilus was discovered later and named for their resemblance TO ARGONAUTS
So i've known for a while that octopuses have naturally short lifespans, dying shortly after reproduction, but what I just learned is that their hormone-triggered death process doesn't just make them waste away, it actually disrupts their mental functioning to the point that

I think a lot about how 3D Ninja Gaiden steadfastly refused to introduced a sprint button, even after Itagaki left. The fastest way to get around was always to dodge-jump in a steady rhythm, even in NG3 RE. No sprint button, Ryu's regular run is extremely slow.
I think with like, 6 out of 10 cases, replacing sprint with button to spin your gun or something would have the exact same effect on the players brain

NG4 eventually compromised on this and gave the player a sprint... but it has a very slow acceleration so as to be basically worthless in combat. Out of combat, sprinting is the best way to get around. Mid-combat, the dodge-jump is still the optimal maneuver.

... And even then, when you finally get to play as Ryu, the dodge-jump still ends up being faster than his dash lol. Nice little touch, I thought.
