Coach Gregg Popovich has won 5 NBA Championships. He is a Coaching Icon. Here are 10 Insights into his Greatness. 1: "It’s not about any one person. You’ve got to get over yourself and realize that it takes a group to get this thing done." Coach Pop is all about TEAM. His entire focus is WE > ME. Selfish play or selfish thought is not allowed. 2: "The measure of who we are is how we react to something that doesn’t go our way." How do you handle adversity? This is the true measure of a person's character. This is what TEAM Sports is all about. Coach Pop teaches life skills, even in the NBA. 3: "I can’t make every decision for you. I don’t have 14 timeouts. You guys got to get together and talk." Coach Pop teaches his guys how to play. How to react. How to adapt. He lets them take the lead in huddles. He asks their opinion. He earns trust because of this. 4: "We believe in people executing their role and caring about the team more than anything individually." Coach Pop talks about Role Definition all of the time. He clearly defines these roles for his players. His players know and excel in their roles. 5: "Basketball is a pretty simple game. What wins is consistency and competitiveness." Less is more. Simple wins. Coach Pop knows this. He applies this to his teams. And they consistently win. 6: "No one is bigger than the team. If you can’t do things our way, you’re not getting time here, and we don’t care who you are." Coach Pop does not put up with selfish players. If a player does not buy into the TEAM concept, they don't last. It is a top priority. 7: "I try not to get impressed. I just try to look at what I see." Coach Pop lives in the moment. He is practical and reasonable in his approach. He has seen a lot and lives in the present. 8: "The older you get, the more you try to appreciate what you’ve accomplished." Great Wisdom from Coach Pop. He realizes how hard it is to win. Live in the moment and appreciate the memories that they provide. You never know if you will get them back. 9: "I’m not too interested in talking about the past. It doesn’t do us any good whatsoever." Learn from the past, but live in the moment. Coach Pop is always looking ahead to the next game, the next practice. Get better each day. 10: "It’s never been my goal to be king of the prom. It’s my goal to do the right thing and get the job done." Simple Man with a simple plan. Do what is right. Play the right way. Be consistent. No need for the limelight. ----- Follow me @gregberge for more Actionable Ideas on Coaching, Leadership, Culture, and Teams. Join 8300 others and subscribe to my free weekly newsletter. Being a Head Coach is Hard. Unless you have done it, you do not understand. Here are 8 Realities that All Head Coaches Face: 1: It will consume you. Coaching is more than just a job - it's a way of life. You'll spend countless hours planning practices, analyzing game film, and strategizing for the next game. It can consume you. But when you see your team succeed, it makes it all worth it. 2: There will always be critics. No matter your success, people will always criticize your decisions and strategies. Even w/State Championship Teams. Know and Accept this. Always remember that you know your team better than anyone, and your goal is to do what's best for them. 3: You are not in it for the money. Coaching does not usually pay well, but it's not about the money. Don't calculate your hourly wage. It is a calling. A lifestyle. It's about the love of the game and helping young athletes grow and develop into their full potential. 4: There is no overnight success. Building a successful team takes time, patience, & dedication. There will be ups and downs, but if you stay the course, you'll see the results. Always remember that your #1 job is to Build Culture. Play the long game with Culture. 5: You need a supportive spouse. This should be #1 on the list for many! Coaching can put a strain on your family Having a spouse who understands and supports your passion is CRITICAL. Make sure to take the time to show your appreciation and give back whenever possible. 6: You will not make everyone happy. As a coach, you will make tough decisions that not everyone will agree with. This happens A LOT. But remember, you're in it for the benefit of the TEAM, not just one individual. You will NEVER make everyone happy. 7: You can't want it more than the kids. As a coach, you can inspire & motivate your players, but ultimately, they have to want it. This can be hard for a younger coach. Encourage them to work hard & set goals. Let them take ownership of their own success. 8: It is still WORTH it! Despite the challenges, being a coach is incredibly rewarding! Watching your players grow & develop into strong, confident young adults is one of the best feelings in the world. Watching a team grow is very rewarding. Always remember WHY you coach. -Sam Cannon
