I think its likely that the Covid-19 vaccine failure in the US was a marketing issue. If the government had presented the vaccine as limited and only available to the wealthy and powerful and/or health care professionals, people would have fought to get it.

Per the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, there are 482,700 licensed plumbers in the US. There are about 20,000 board certified pathologists. Who on X has gotten a plumber to come work in the middle of the night for $58? I submit that the law of supply and demand has been usurped.

Maybe we should lobby congress to link our fee schedule to the market-based plumbing fee schedule. Can we be reimbursed the same as snaking a drain to make an interpretation about whether a human being has a life-altering disease and needs therapy?

Here’s a real world example. My friend, a pathologist, had a sewer pump problem at 6 pm. He was charged $150 for the plumber showing up plus $120/hr. Two days later he’s waiting for 3 hrs after work for a parathyroid frozen that will pay him $58. This isn’t sustainable.

After 9 years of training, a pathologist in 2024 will get paid $35.36 to diagnose a person’s cancer, compared to $45 in 2000. That is a 45% decrease in inflation-adjusted income. 0.006% of the US population is trained to do this job. When do we say enough is enough?
