This year, nearly 14,000 New Yorkers saved millions of dollars in fees by filing their taxes for free with Direct File.
New York is proud to be one of the first states to offer this tool, and we’re working to expand the program so we can save even more taxpayers money next year!

It’s important to not lose sight of how we got to today’s big announcement on Direct File. The IRS and U.S. Digital Service built a first-class technology product following extensive testing and feedback from taxpayers. It was a master class in how to build government technology.

Direct File is now a permanent service.
After a successful pilot and incredible feedback from users, the IRS has committed to providing a free, fast, easy, and direct option for taxpayers. 💥

NYC reports it has almost completely eliminated its (VERY LARGE) backlog for SNAP (food stamps) and cash aid!
And they did it by... reducing administrative burden! Namely, they are waiving the 6-month report!!
