Nearly 3 years ago, I pitched an essay on AI to Jacobin, which became a cover story, which became a book about the biggest project in history: Obsolete: The AI Industry's Trillion-Dollar Race to Replace You—and How to Stop It Preorders w/ @orbooks @thenation ship in May 🧵

With many millions of deaths expected. This is so far beyond partisan politics. Truly one of the great monsters of history.
Instead of discussing how Elon Musk is now the world's first trillionaire, we should talk about how he killed hundreds of thousands of people through his dismantling of food and medical aid to poor countries currentaffairs.org/news/how-…

In recent weeks, OpenAI has made multiple statements distancing itself from Leading the Future, the accelerationist, Greg Brockman-funded super PAC, and Build American AI, the PAC’s advocacy group. Brockman's donation, OpenAI insists, was made in a “personal capacity." But @ReadTransformer has found that not everyone working within LTF appears to view it that way. “For this project I’m funded by four separate entities … OpenAI is just one of them,” Nathan Leamer, executive director of Build American AI, told Transformer over text message on May 3. “I think the best way to think of it is the corporate funders all have a say," he said.

Any real intl regulation of ai is going to need trustless verification, so this is a positive development by basically anyone’s lights (except the ones who just want to let it rip).
Big development - Anthropic is now advocating to build verification mechanisms to enable the option to pause AI development.

Even in the world of dirty tricks, this is pretty fucking gross.
Welp, there it is: Leading The Future admits to paying a vendor to run anonymous sockpuppet accounts posting stuff like this. Everyone can now rest easy knowing that this wasn't *core* to their strategy. (By the way, it took us a fair bit of digging to link to BAAI... afaik nobody else had put the dots together until we dug into it. Plus, it clearly was not seen as satire to the people in most of their comments... just go look at them! The accounts are still up.) Ghastly stuff. Truly.

Weird thing to say given that Bernie's focus is on jobs and x-risk, where data center placement matters little.
I caught ip with @sama again as he went in to speak to @SenSanders. “I understand the concern about data centers. I don't think data centers should push up rate payers' electricity, and I don't think they should be in places where people don't want them. But…” (1/2)

OpenAI is tripling down on an untenable position. The company's chief lobbyist Chris Lehane was one of the architects of Leading the Future and its president and cofounder is the biggest donor. LtF is an OpenAI super PAC. Full stop.
Call me obtuse, but I don't think you can: (1) be OpenAI's president; (2) make donations advised by OpenAI's chief lobbyist; (3) direct said donations to an industry PAC that OpenAI's chief lobbyist helped build and *modeled* on the last PAC he ran; and (4) go to the media advertising that the donation is in service of OpenAI's mission; And then act surprised if people misunderstand whether the PAC speaks on behalf of you or your company instead.

Over the weekend the former head of Trump's Border Patrol attended a summit with fascists from around the world who are calling for "Weimar solutions" and it for some reason has received almost no press coverage. theredoubt.net/why-did-the-p…

Recently read the fascinating memoir of a journalist who traveled to Palestine in 1929 as a supporter of Zionism and came away thinking that the idea of establishing a Jewish state there was the most insane folly imaginable and would lead to endless conflict with the majority Arab population. Wrote about it here with some of his incredibly prescient quotes: currentaffairs.org/news/how-…

Not consistently candid…
Reading the @ProgressChamber report and am curious how to square "no one in the White House wanted to meet" with Andreessen Horowitz part with the videos of Marc Andreessen discussing his infamous meeting with the Biden Admin on AI? x.com/AFpost/status/18618166… progresschamber.org/project/…

Shrey spelling 32 words in 90 seconds to win the Spelling Bee is the new greatest athletic accomplishment of 2026. I don’t even know how he said the letters that fast. Got a “Holy Mackerel” out of @minakimes

And ironically, headlines about dems breaking with him probably help him on net!
This is what I mean when I say the storyline's being forced. Fox News headline: "Democrats break with scandal-plagued Graham Platner, warn of 'civil war' in party" Okay. Who are the Democrats breaking with Platner? - "Melissa DeRosa, former New York Mayor Andrew Cuomo’s chief of staff" - "Former Biden press office chief of staff Yemisi Egbewole" - "Michael LaRosa, former spokesperson for former first lady Jill Biden" As Norm McDonald would say: All the stars are here! The other quotes are the fresh Auchincloss criticism from CNN, which he has partially walked back, and a mid-April quote from Fetterman. No criticism from Maine Dems, and just one from an elected New England Dem this month. CiViL wAr!!!! foxnews.com/politics/democra…

I wish the seemingly actually important PSAs I see weren’t so clearly authored by AI.
READ: A short story that's happening right now. Something deeply dangerous in SF. A waste of taxpayer dollars. A decision driven by greed. One that will undermine community health & safety. No one knows about it. Please read & share. There's still time to change how it ends.
