Today marks the 6th anniversary of @jk_rowling's remarkable and important essay about her "reasons for speaking out sex and gender issues." It is powerful, personal—and undeniably courageous. It is as relevant today as when she wrote it. Her experience is a case study in what happens if you challenge a rigid ideological orthodoxy. The backlash is immediate, relentless, and often vicious. As she asked then, “So why am I doing this? Why speak up? Why not quietly do my research and keep my head down?” I find inspiration in JK's consistent fight for the truth and her refusal to be intimidated and scared away by the online mob. I was at the May 1990 Bootle by-election when the SDP polled 263 fewer votes than the Monster Raving Loonies. A week later David Owen (who visited during the campaign) announced the party would dissolve saying that it could not possibly continue after finishing behind the Loonies

Backing local businesses and our high streets is a priority for me as Executive Mayor. This morning we launched a £500,000 package of targeted support to make it easier to start, grow and invest in Croydon. We are taking practical action: • £10,000 grants to bring empty units back into use • 12 weeks business rates relief for new businesses moving into targeted vacant units • Up to £5,000 shop improvement grants • A dedicated business concierge - one clear point of contact into the Council • Cleaner, safer streets with stronger enforcement This is about removing barriers, supporting enterprise and bringing confidence back to our high streets. Croydon means business - restoring pride and confidence in Croydon.

Since 2022, I’ve worked with the Food Stop team, one of the most rewarding parts of being a councillor. It’s more than food: advice, care, and support as per their motto: “A hand-up, not a hand-out.” Great to meet with the Mayor to build on this vital work
