Crazy that this is getting barely any coverage. This year’s European Press Prize was just awarded to an investigative report by the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. It is entitled “What the Wounds Tell” and in it the journalists Maud Effting and Willem Feenstra document the cases of 114 children in Gaza under the age of 15 who were struck by a single bullet to the head or chest. Almost all of them died or were left severely disabled. They chose to document only the cases of boys and girls under the age of 15 (though often much younger: aged 3, 4 or 7) because these are children who can be immediately identified as such. “A single bullet in these parts of the body is a clear indication that these children were deliberately targeted“, the two journalists write.

Saudi Arabia's Port of NEOM is marketing itself as an alternative trade route for Gulf importers following Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, but shipping data suggests such workarounds remain niche, offering speed for select cargo rather than a fix for wider supply chain disruptions

Finishing my first week at @CrisisGroup —an organisation I’ve long admired & am now incredibly grateful to be a part of.
For work-related matters, you can reach me at my new email:📩 jvaughan@crisisgroup.org
My mobile number remains the same.
I’m back on here strictly to share my work. For y’all who don’t know, I’m a journalist covering Arabic music and the emerging wave of artists in the Middle East, North Africa, and its global diaspora communities. Here are some stories I’ve worked on to give y’all an idea:
Lebanon's finance minister tells @NazihOsseiran & @BassamLail economy is projected to shrink by 7-10% & could lose $20bln due to the devastating war b/w Israel & Hezbollah. Worries that usual lifelines of tourism & Gulf remittances won't suffice this time

The sources said Saudi Arabia made Iran aware of the strikes and this was followed by intensive diplomatic engagement and Saudi threats to retaliate further, which led to an understanding between the two countries to de-escalate.

Over 100 strikes on Lebanon in 24 hours. Civilians killed. Families displaced.
We are doing everything to get support to those who need it. But what people need most is a genuine ceasefire.
ALT “There is no truth to this at all. Nicholas Kristof is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has reported on sexual violence for decades, and is widely regarded as one of the world’s best on-the-ground reporters documenting and bearing witness to sexual abuse experienced by women and men in war and conflict zones. He traveled to the region to report firsthand on the stories of Palestinians who suffered abuse, and his article collects accounts in the victims’ own words, backed by independent studies.”
— Charlie Stadtlander, a spokesperson for The New York Times
Hearing from longtime friends @nytimes there are already discussions, including up the masthead, about retracting @NickKristof column. Issues with source credibility and lack of evidence. No indications the Kristof sourcing mistakes were deliberate. Still problematic:
Come work with me!
A really cool job just opened up on our international investigations team at The New York Times for a reporter specializing in OSINT, with lots of room for different skillsets
