The most difficult piece I have written in a while, but I learnt so much on EV powertrain testing!π‘
Huge thanks to the companies who helped me with this piece π
A sneak preview below β¬οΈ
The full article is in the latest issue of @RaceEngineTech β‘οΈ highpowermedia.com/Product/aβ¦
In this piece, I explain:
β‘οΈ How e-motor dynos work
β‘οΈ Permanent magnet motors

When I was in F1, one of the tyre blankets was removed too early so the car left the garage with one tyre a few degrees cooler. This never got up to temperature throughout the stint π₯Ά
F1 tyres are so sensitive, one degree can significantly affect performance π‘οΈ
How long do @F1 tyres spend in tyre blankets and what temperature are they heated to? ππ‘οΈ
βͺπ‘π΄ SLICKS -> Maximum of 2hrs at 70degC
π’ INTERMEDIATES -> Maximum of 2hrs at 60degC
π΅ WETS -> No preheating allowed
Find out how tyre blankets work β‘οΈ lnkd.in/gdvdA28A
Colder tyres mean slower outlaps and the undercut will be less effective. This could encourage teams to stay out longer and overcut more π
For my IndyCar followers - how has removing tyre blankets affected the pitstop strategy? Does it add more variability to the racing? π€
Happy International Women in Engineering day! βοΈ π
Hi five β to all the incredible female engineers I have met throughout my career - you are inspirational so this is an appreciation post for you π

Engineers have a crucial role in innovating technologies that can help us be more efficient with the world's resources, time & money π
If you know anyone who is interested in engineering, whatever their gender, race or background then spread the word - engineering is awesome
Engineering is not just a subject, it's a way of thinking and approaching problems. It can lead to building racecars, aircraft, rockets or wind turbines π
We need more engineers!
Hello Twitter π
It's been a looooong time since I posted anything - how is everyone's June going?
Mine had a wobbly start but the strategy has come good the last week! π
For all my @F1 followers - check out @brrrake and watch the race alongside a former F1 trackside engineer!
Can't get better insight than from someone who has actually been there and done it! π
Day 2 begins! π First up our course leader Gemma Hatton is giving our students an insight into the black art of race engineering - tyres!
