ALT Overview of my presentation on ‘Are We Underestimating Anthropogenic Microfiber Pollution? A Critical Review of Occurrence, Methods and Reporting’ by Sam Athey and Lisa Erdle (University of Toronto). Key take-aways: 450 studies on microfibers in the environment were reviewed. Indoor compartments, pathways to the environment (e.g., stormwater, sewage sludge) & terrestrial ecosystems are relatively understudied in the microfiber literature. When reported, most studies report greater amounts of natural & semi-synthetic fibers compared to synthetic fibers. We found widespread use of methods designed for microplastics, that are destructive to or may misidentify non-synthetic fibers. We recommend a number of best practices for improving capture & estimation of non-synthetic fibers in environmental samples. Watch presentation 4.06.01 to learn more!
