ALT A meet the scientist card for Ashley Patton, engineering geologist. The card states her research areas as shallow geothermal energy / engineering geology / landslide risk assessment / urban geoscience / 3D modelling / volcanology.
Two @EuroGeosciences offerings from me this year, neither of them icy for once!
First up is a poster featuring out @NERCscience “SmartRes” geothermal project, Wednesday pm (see pic).
And on Thurs, it’s a “Feel the Physics” poster, inc. tactile panels!
In Vienna? Come say hi!
BGS has a catalogue of images for public use. Here are some from the 'sedimentary features' collection, which has examples of unconformities & junction planes between beds of different age, brecciation, & concretions and nodules.

ALT Conlig Lead Mine - tip heap at North Engine Shaft, loose block. Breccia from Lead Lode. Fragments of Lower Palaeozoic grit cemented by quartz and calcite. Grit rimmed by patina of quartz.
ALT SE coast, Sully Island. Looking N. Triassic - Carboniferous unconformity, Sully Island. Red Triassic strata in the background with a small fault in top right of photograph. Carboniferous 'Black Rock Dolomite' in the foreground dips north-east at 45 degrees The 'planed-off' surface represents the exhumed Triassic land surface. Small pebbles and flakes of Carboniferous Limestone in calcareous sandstone matrix cover the limestone on the left, the figure on the right (height 1.7 m.) is standing on a surface of bare limestone. The basal Triassic Clastic Unit can be seen to thicken towards the left.
ALT 0.4 km. E. of Cove Harbour. Concretionary ball with calcareous cement in a sandstone of cementstone group (Calciferous Sandstone Series).

ALT A person doing ground investigations, crouching on the floor, looking into a laptop. A borehole sits in front of them. They are wearing full PPE.
We worked with @Cenergist & @BritGeoSurvey on the design of the two closed-loop GSHP borehole arrays for these installations at Keyworth. The arrays have been designed to deliver long-term sustainable ambient energy from the ground, whilst minimising parasitic pumping energy.
🚨We're looking for a new Chief Scientist to lead the BGS Multihazards & Resilience Challenge Area!
This is an exciting senior leadership opportunity to lead a core part of BGS research, encompassing our geohazards, EO & geomagnetism teams.
