On July 7, 1998, Nigeria lost MKO Abiola, the man who won an election the military stole from him. Now, Abdulsalami Abubakar, in his autobiography Call of Duty, says He was NOT poisoned. He died of natural causes. Let’s unpack this carefully. 👇
Now here’s the claim, Abiola collapsed during a meeting with US envoys Tom Pickering & Susan Rice. An international autopsy American, British, Nigerian & Canadian pathologists reportedly ruled natural causes. A 1994 military medical report allegedly showed Abiola had an enlarged heart & hypertensive heart disease.
But it should be worth noting that Abdulsalami is a man who CONTROLLED the environment where Abiola died. His word alone packaged conveniently in an 84th birthday memoir launched at Aso Villa is NOT evidence. It is narrative management.
Here’s what nobody is saying loudly enough. This is a dead man’s autobiography defending the regime that held a living man captive for FOUR YEARS. The same system that annulled June 12. The same military that jailed Abiola for daring to claim what was his.
Citing Susan Rice’s memoir as corroboration is clever PR but selective. We must ask. Why is this truth emerging in 2026, not 1999? Why did no independent Nigerian civilian pathologist lead that autopsy? Why was there no ambulance at a sitting Head of State’s facility when a high-profile detainee collapsed?
If Abiola’s health was so dangerously compromised since 1994 why was he STILL in detention? Why wasn’t he medically released? That negligence alone is culpable homicide by another name.
MKO deserved freedom. He deserved his mandate. He got neither, and now we’re supposed to accept a general’s autobiography as closure? Nigeria, we must NEVER stop demanding the full truth about June 12.
RT to keep this conversation alive. History owes MKO Abiola more than a dead man’s defense.
