I always related to this saying because it punctures the arrogance and superficiality of someone who would criticize Torah. But now that I see the extra layer of accusation — because you’re lazy — I appreciate it even more.
Every interaction I had with Robert Louis Wilken showed his humility and generosity of spirit. When we first met he surprised me by treating me like a close friend. I last emailed him about one of Ishai Ribo’s songs, which he found deeply meaningful. May his memory be a blessing.
In memory of Robert Louis Wilken, who died today from cancer at 89, here, from 2004, is one of his most important essays. It is one of the intellectual touchstones of my life and work. What a great, great man we lost today.
