The Gilman Program provides merit-based scholarships of up to $5,000 to talented American undergraduate students with high financial need to study or intern abroad. Dependents of active or activated U.S. military personnel who are receiving any type of Title IV financial aid are invited to apply for the Gilman-McCain Scholarship, which provides $5,000 to study or intern abroad. Students taking STEM classes or studying languages important to national security while abroad can apply for additional funding. Congratulations to the 1,500 American undergraduates selected as recipients of the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program! These Gilman Scholars will study or intern in over 90 countries in 2026. They represent 583 colleges and universities and all 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Northern Mariana Islands and are federal Pell Grant recipients. With support from the Gilman Program, Cameron Alexis went on a business-focused study abroad program to Japan and South Korea. While there, he met with business professionals in each country, learned more about infrastructure design, and developed a better understanding of global project management. “You can’t understand what international collaboration demands until you’re in it. Now I know what [it] takes, and I know I’m ready for it.” The skills that Cameron developed studying abroad will make him more competitive as he earns his degree in finance and pursues a career in international project management.

Machine learning, artificial intelligence, blockchain… Tamari Beard explored these topics and more during her study abroad experience as a Gilman Scholar in the Netherlands. After returning home to the United States and graduating with a degree in business marketing and operations, she leveraged her strong academic record and Gilman experience to attain a position at General Mills. Today, she uses those AI and analytical skills in her daily work! Tamari recently participated in DC-based training to serve as a Gilman Alumni Ambassador. In this role, she’ll support and mentor U.S. undergraduate students to apply to the Gilman Program!

Mallorie Simpson, a Gilman Scholar and aerospace engineering major, chose to study abroad in Spain this summer to sharpen her language and programming skills. Her goal? To stand out in a competitive field after graduation. Mallorie explored how software and systems are approached in Spain and discovered that the rewards of studying abroad far outweigh the challenges of adjusting to a new environment. “Being uncomfortable is temporary…there’s too much to experience to let doubt take over.” One highlight from her study abroad experience was hearing and meeting a representative from the game design company behind Angry Birds: “Companies like these remind me that there are endless possibilities for where these skills can take you.”

As an undergraduate student in Alabama, Samuel Watson wanted to learn the Korean language. That interest propelled Samuel to study abroad in South Korea with a scholarship from the Gilman Program. As a Gilman scholar in Seoul, Korea, Samuel took part in intensive language training. When he came back home he shared his knowledge by teaching introductory Korean to students at the University of Alabama! Now Samuel is pursuing a master’s degree in computer science with the goal of combining his Korean language and coding skills to advance cybersecurity. As one of our new Gilman Alumni Ambassadors, Samuel was in Washington D.C. this summer learning how to help U.S. undergraduates gain a competitive edge by studying abroad.
