This @StateDept-@UFC partnership is the next chapter in @ECAatState's long sports diplomacy history, leveraging one of the world's most-watched sports to advance American foreign policy. 🇺🇸
UFC has become a global phenomenon by embracing values that resonate far beyond the Octagon: excellence, discipline, opportunity, and meritocracy.
Proud to launch a new Sports Diplomacy partnership with @UFC and grateful to host @DanaWhite for the signing of our MOU.
Strengthening border security is a top U.S. priority. @Smithsonian and @StateDept’s Cultural Heritage Center recently led two law enforcement trainings for 300 @CBP, @ICEgov, and @FBI officers to curb the illicit trafficking of antiquities from North Africa into the U.S.
Illicit trafficking of antiquities funds criminal networks. By training frontline officers to spot these risks, we’re keeping looted goods out of the U.S. market and helping keep our borders strong against crime.
This training by the interagency Cultural Antiquities Task Force reinforces U.S. leadership in protecting cultural heritage in Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco. We remain committed to the rule of law and safeguarding our shared history.

The @StateDept’s AFCP remains one of our most impactful tools for preserving the world’s heritage while strengthening key partnerships for the United States abroad. 🇺🇸🏛️🇳🇵
The U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) is one of the coolest cultural things we do at State. For modest amounts, we help to excavate, preserve, and restore priceless historic buildings, archeological sites, religious archives, and other world heritage.
Today I toured Patan Durbar Square, a complex of 16-17C palace and temple structures damaged by a 2015 earthquake. AFCP stepped in to support repairs, which were led by the gracious and expert Dr. Rohit Ranjitkar. Lalitpur Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan welcomed me and joined us on our tour.
Restorations on many of these buildings were marginal — the teak timber held up well over centuries of tectonic events. Where new carvings were needed, Dr. Ranjitkar tracked down descendants of the original artisans who chiseled the fixtures, providing them training where needed so they could contribute replacement pieces.

It was a great pleasure to host @DarrenJBeattie
— a sharp and influential voice whose ideas continue to enrich transatlantic policy discourse — at the 🇬🇪Embassy.
Thank you for the excellent discussion on strengthening U.S.-Georgia relations and deepening the historic cultural and people-to-people bonds between our two nations.
Thank you to @UnderSecPD for the shout out to award winning glassblower Dale Chihuly and his new sculptures debuted in Venice - right where he conducted his Fulbright Fellowship.
American glass artist (and Fulbright alum!) Dale Chihuly debuted several new sculptures in Venice. His works are arresting and crowd-pleasing and sometimes resemble sea creatures. Chihuly was the first American to work at the famous Venini glass factory, and his installations fuse the delicacy of Venetian glasswork with American brashness/spectacle. People I met randomly on streets and in hotel lobbies remarked on them.
At the recent conclusion of the Cultural Heritage Forward exchange, ECA SBO Darren Beattie spoke with Chilean and Peruvian cultural leaders in Washington, D.C. The program builds on decades of U.S. commitment to protecting cultural heritage and advancing freedom of expression.

Fulbrighters reach new heights—even the top of the world. 🏔️
On the anniversary of the first successful American Mount Everest Expedition in 1963, we remember Fulbright alumnus Norman Dyhrenfurth.
A Fulbright U.S. Scholar to Italy in 1953, Dyhrenfurth led the ascent that placed five American climbers on Everest’s summit, captured national attention and sparked a wave of public interest in mountaineering. Upon their return, Dyhrenfurth and other members of the expedition were honored with @InsideNatGeo's prestigious Hubbard Medal, awarded only 31 times and reserved for trailblazing explorers including Neil Armstrong.
Their story also inspired millions of people in the United States and around the world through the award-winning documentary film Americans on Everest, directed by Dyhrenfurth and narrated by Orson Welles, which became @NatGeo's first television special.
This expedition and its legacy exemplify Fulbright leadership and American achievement.

This year, American Spaces hosted programs on the U.S. Constitution. In honor of Freedom 250, discussions highlighted America’s core concepts of federalism, freedom, inalienable rights, and the amendment process that protects them.
A shared understanding of the U.S. Constitution and the principles that shape American democracy helps build trust and strengthen international relationships that benefit Americans at home and abroad.
