We are thrilled to support @_benkaufman's work on @SpecterWallet and also @remyers_@diopfode and Will Clark for their work on Lot49 to expand Bitcoin/Lightning use in censored/low-bandwidth parts of the world.
Thanks to @tyler, @cameron, and @Gemini for making this possible!
Happy to be working with @willcl_ark and @diopfode on this project. Will is going to be implementing and testing compressed block headers, Fodé on a low-bandwidth wallet apps and I'll be working on off-grid Lightning and messaging.
Very grateful for this support from the @HRF Bitcoin Dev fund. 🙏
The ability to work with limited resource is important for decentralization. We hope by focusing on bandwidth we can advance this goal not just for #Bitcoin, but for communication generally. 📻⚡️🕸️

.@remyers_ notes that bitcoin's usefulness in extreme situations depends on mobile-compatible systems with low bandwidth requirements.
As little as 2 MB per week could be enough for many users to use bitcoin as money.

1/4 Some existing #Bitcoin wallets have features to reduce bandwidth, but more effort in this direction is needed for 'mobile-only' computer users that currently rely on custodial web wallets.

Many potential #Bitcoin users are "mobile-only" and limited by expensive metered bandwidth. In this article I explore the trade-offs and potential approaches to "Low Bandwidth Bitcoin" usage in developing countries.

Bottom up decentralization communication is one way to break the lock of centralized networks. Community wifi, UHF mobile mesh devices and shortwave digital radio are all technologies that can help. How to bootstrap decentralized networks is the missing piece. 🕸️📻⚡️
Incentivized mobile mesh devices using Lot49 could someday get Internet connectivity via gateways to fixed community mesh networks like @AltheaNetwork! We just need some Rust devs willing to help @adamsoltys add #LightningNetwork support. ⚡️🕸️
I also see Lightning as a p2p incentivized data network which could over time evolve to offer at least 2 critical #Web3 apps:
5) Private p2p chat
6) Identity issuance via a "layer 3" #NFT minting protocol like #RGB
Finished building Iridium satellite 📡 dev box! (includes goTenna Mesh SMS gateway w/ cellular BH & GPS) Just need to mount and connect up the solar panel.
Great interview with @danielaperdomo that also covers building a global decentralized communication network via open source initiative @GlobalMeshLabs.
"People who are interested in decentralized money should also be interested in a decentralized communication transport layer."
imagine losing communication in the terrifying heat of a blazing wildfire. i sat down with @danielaperdomo and talked @goTenna, her decentralized, peer-to-peer communication infrastructure, keeping our first responders safe, and the future of the signal. soundcloud.com/anatomyofnext…
In the second part of our article on the #scalability of #meshnetworks, we use a Beltway analogy to discuss the impact of bitrate, message load, and protocols on scalability and introduce a zero-control-packet approach that enables unprecedented scaling. bit.ly/31g4NV4
