Story Time:
I started working at a startup over 5 years ago.
Small startup that was just trying to get its footing.
My boss and I sourced up a pretty big sales opportunity early on.
Big money deal with a real chance for huge upside.
For 14 months we worked our tails off on it.
Late nights, long days, the whole nine yards. At the end of those 14 months, we landed it.
They signed the contract.
That deal, no exaggeration, fundamentally changed the company's future.
We were a $15M revenue org at the time… 5 years later, we’re about to surpass $300M in annual revenue.
The night they signed, my boss took me (and a few others) out to an amazing steakhouse in NYC to celebrate.
Next morning, I’m back in the office, and the first thing my boss says to me is: “Alright, man, now we have to go find another one.”
While I understood and agreed, it was a reality check.
Helped me understand that today's outcomes have zero impact on the work required tomorrow.
You go 4-4 with 2 doubles and a bomb — cool, get back to work.
You go 0-4 with 3 strikeouts — cool, get back to work.
Good day or bad day, the work tomorrow doesn’t change.
