🚨I call on the EU to step up now to protect Christians, Alawites, and Kurds in Syria and to hold the Syrian regime accountable for the massacres and persecution taking place.
📍As I stressed to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, the EU has a duty to stand up for every religious and ethnic community in the Middle East. Yet in Syria, violence and persecution against Christians, Alawites, and Kurds are still going on.
➡️ “What accountability does the Syrian regime face in its cooperation with the European Union? Are you prepared to move forward with concrete measures to guarantee that the Syrian authorities finally put an end to the persecution of religious and ethnic communities across the country?”
Kallas admitted that “we cannot say everything is stable and peaceful” and acknowledged that “things are happening,” but she offered no concrete commitments, timeline, or action plan. Instead, she spoke broadly about giving the new Syrian authorities “a chance” to move toward “integration” of all communities — without explaining how minority protections will actually be guaranteed or enforced.
➡️ The European Union cannot keep looking the other way while Christians, Alawites, and Kurds in Syria are being persecuted. Vague statements and general promises are not enough. Protecting religious and ethnic communities is not optional — it is a core obligation of the EU.
We will keep pushing until we see real, binding action — not just acknowledgments. The Syrian regime’s accountability toward Europe must be clear and immediate.
