Just had a member of my team, someone who has been with me for almost 10 years and whom I considered my right-hand guy for anything I couldn't handle in my schedule, task, and project-wise, submit his resignation. He had found a job that better fit his professional growth path and gave him a good pay increase.
Though it wasn't a total shock (I had sent him a letter of recommendation for his application), it's still a pretty big blow to my team's ability to perform at the level I'm used to seeing.
What shocked me was that he was afraid I would be mad at him when he called to give notice of his leaving. I've trained him for this very thing (if I did my job right) and told him I couldn't be prouder, and how awesome it was that he was heading out on a new journey to better himself and make the best life for his family he can. I'm sad, but man, it's a good sad if that makes sense.
I'm not sure about you guys, but I feel as though perhaps it's more normal that I'd hope out there for a boss or employer to get upset about someone leaving and even letting them go that day (something we won't be doing either). Am I the outlier here?
