If enrollment is declining, it's not because students don't value education. It's because we're not effectively communicating the value of our degrees. 🎓 Institutions aren't connecting those dots clearly enough. We tout lofty notions of lifelong learning and personal growth, but fail to translate that into the concrete, career-oriented terms that resonate with students. Terrell Halaska Dunn formerly of @HCMStrat came on our recent episode to discuss recent research done about the perceptions students have about the value of higher education. She puts the onus squarely on colleges and universities to bridge the perception gap around higher ed's ROI. As Dunn explains, today's prospective students are laser-focused on career outcomes. They want to know, in specific and convincing terms, how investing their time and money in a degree will lead to a good job, economic stability, and long-term social mobility. To win back enrollment, colleges need to: - Directly address the reasons students pursue higher ed: career success, financial security, socioeconomic advancement - Tangibly demonstrate how our programs lead to those outcomes, with hard data and real-world examples - Acknowledge the short-term trade-offs and opportunity costs, but make a compelling case for the long-term ROI - Tailor our messaging to speak to students' practical concerns and aspirations, not just our own institutional ideals In short, it's not enough to assume students will inherently recognize the value of a degree. We must proactively make that value proposition clear, relevant, and irresistible. Listen to the entire episode that fully examines how universities can better communicate their ROI. #highered #academictwitter This episode is made with support from the @gatesfoundation.
