The 2026
#Indy500 marked the 7th "500" held on May 24. And the 51st held on a Sunday.
From 1911 to 1970, the Indianapolis 500 was normally held on May 30. At the time, Memorial Day was a fixed-date holiday - always May 30. If the 30th fell on a Sunday, the race was pushed to Monday May 31st.
Beginning in 1971, Memorial Day was moved to the last Monday in May. Since 1974, the "500" has been scheduled for the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.
For 2027, the race is scheduled for Sunday May 30th. With it falling on the 30th, it'll be the 55th time the race is held on the old "traditional" date of May 30, and the 52nd time on a Sunday.
