Almost all CO2 in melt inclusions is hidden in bubbles. TiVonne used Raman spectroscopy and ion microprobe analysis to provide the first measurement of total magmatic CO2 for Soufriere Hills #Volcano. Her results reveal transcrustal magma storage and quantify CO2 fluxes.

In August 2024, I recorded 65 fatal landslides around the world, which claimed 414 lives. The total number of fatal landslides in 2024 continues to exceed any previous year by a significant margin, probably reflecting high global atmospheric temperatures.

IAVCEI is saddened to learn that Hans-Ulrich Schmincke passed away on 24/08/24 at the age of 86. He was SG of IAVCEI between 1983-1991, and awarded the Thorarinsson medal in 1993. During his mandate, he revamped the publication model of BV, a legacy that we profit from today

It is very unlikely that the eruption will reach any infrastructure now 👍 but it has ignited extensive wildfires. The burning moss is thick and lush and it's a very sad sight #Reykjanes #Grindavik #volcano

New paper led by @Volcannabelle uses microtextures & volatiles in #obsidian from #Krafla, #Iceland to reveal how silicic lava is produced (from pyroclasts) and how silicic fissure eruptions focus. Congrats to the team inc @WadsworthFabian and @hollyeunwin, & thanks @landsvirkjun!

‘Heroes in the fire’ is a short film telling the story of local fire brigades risking their lives to tackle wildfires in the Amazon rainforest.
Our own Professor Jos Barlow (@JosBarlow) commissioned the film after seeing the brigades during research trips studying the forest.
