Staff and parents from St Dominic's in #Hackney take their case to Westminster today to save their school. A brilliant move because ultimately the government has to change the funding formula, which penalises small schools the moment a class size drops below 30. @HackneyNEU

Out this morning supporting the St Dominic's school community in #Hackney as they fight to save their school. The plans should be paused pending the area-approach to falling rolls the council is adopting next year. #HackneyNEU #SaveOurSchools youtu.be/_S-16Tt-CyM?si=cB6i…

@cyclingkev speaks at today's @HackneyNEU picket at St Dominic's Catholic Primary School, Homerton E9 - one of 4 schools in the borough @hackneycouncil want to close. @UKLabour are "listening" to non-doms but not to children, parents or the @NEUnion. Fight to #SaveOurSchools

It was great to have @DanielKebedeNEU join our picket line today supporting members and community supporters who are fighting to save their much loved school. We are losing too many London schools. Change the funding formula, lower class sizes and sort austerity out!
Proud to be standing with members at St Dominic's Primary School in Hackney today. This and 3 other schools in the borough face closure due to a declining pupil role. Gentrification and high living costs have meant London has been at the sharp edge of this crisis. However, a record low birth rate means this could soon be happening to a school near you anywhere in 🇬🇧. This year is the first year when there has been fewer pupils in our schools. Once these schools are closed, the community resource is lost for ever. We currently have the highest class sizes in Europe with 1,000,000 being taught in class sizes of 31 or more. Government should invest in education and our children - and instead of allowing school closures, use this as an opportunity to bring class sizes down closer to a european average. Class sizes of 20 are a good thing! Save our schools!

⚠️ This week, the Department for Education proposed an unfunded 2.8% pay rise for teachers. Make no mistake: this means further cuts for our schools. This unfunded expense will throw a wrecking ball into many school budgets. Here’s why: ⬇️

#HACKNEY A long list of identified savings = cuts to local public services within Public Health for our borough. Local authorities are absolutely pushed and been so for 14 yrs- no one denies that. But "these difficult decisions" can be avoided if the #Labour central govt was truly for the people. A #WealthTax could generate income to cover these costs instead of depriving residents from their essential healthcare services. LONG LIST OF CONFIRMED & EXPECTED PUBLIC HEALTH CUTS #HACKNEY 24/27: ❌ Community Wellbeing Team £170,000 ❌ Pause £5,000 ❌ Young Persons’(YP) Sexual Health £312,000 ❌ Young Persons’ Smoking Cessation £5,000 ❌Infection Prevention & Control £44,000 ❌ Tobacco control £93,000 ❌ Mental health awareness £25,000 ❌ Mental health wellbeing network £500,000 ❌ Health Early Years £23,000 ❌ IRIS £50,000 ❌ Healthy weight £159,000 ❌ Physical activity £85,000 (incl Falls Prevention Service) ❌ Community engagement & co-production £25,000 ❌ Primary Care enhanced sexual health £50,000 ❌ CEG enhanced services support contract £20,000 ❌ Open Doors £50,000 ❌ Out of area sexual health cross charging £200,000 ❌ Substance use £175,000 Young Hackney Redesign £75,000 ❌ Oral Health £40,000 ❌ Welfare advice in health settings £120,000 Total identified savings £2,226,000 £750,000 of savings yet to be identified.

Today, accompanied by the fantastic staff at Wood End Infant & Pre-School in Milton Keynes, the children & staff from St Dominics in Hackney - we delivered a petition signed by 10,000 parents to the Chancellor calling for her to reverse school cuts. Our ad vans have also been patrolling Westminster today with a clear ask... Rachel Reeves will you commit to restoring school funding to 2010 levels?

Hackney council seems intent pushing through cuts w/ online tickbox consultations, ignoring residents, while their own party runs Gov. They’ll then ask for your vote in 2026. Residents, parents, teachers, youth, council workers - they’ll all remember when that time comes.

@hackneycouncil want to close more of our community schools. As you can imagine, educators, parents and children are upset by this and wanted to let you know how they feel. A Labour council should be fighting for better funding and smaller class sizes. Not school closures.
