Sixty-three years ago, as Kenyans raised the national flag for the first time, the people of Wajir, Garissa, and Mandera were not celebrating the dawn of opportunity. They were handed a different document titled African Socialism and Its Application to Planning in Kenya, codified what colonial cartography had begun - a policy of deliberate, structural segregation in development. The architects of independence argued for a pragmatic allocation of resources, prioritising regions with “high potential” for agriculture and industry. In practice, this meant the fertile highlands of Central, Rift Valley, and Nyanza would receive hospitals, tarmac roads, and schools, while the arid Northern Frontier District (NFD), now the counties of Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, and Isiolo - were left to the mercy of camels and dust. ow.ly/ru7450Z8v87

Today, we hosted a delegation from @ForumCivESA at our office in Garissa. The delegation was on a monitoring visit concerning the ongoing Our Rights Our Future ( OROF) Capacity Building Programme. The Programme aims to strengthen youth-led and youth-focused Civil Society Organizations.

@Hacodev, represented by the Director of Programs, Abduqafar Hassan, had the privilege of being a panelist on Women and Youth in Livestock Innovation at the Africa Livestock Resilience Program(ALRP) Regional Workshop in Nairobi. The Workshop initiated by the @isdb_group took place from the 9-12th February 2026. This initiative aims at promoting sustainable and climate-resilient livestock value chains that enhance climate adaptation, strengthen food security and contribute to socio-economic development and poverty reduction. The Workshop sought to strengthen the design and implementation of ALRP country projects through a country-led, co-creative approach. Hassan underscored the need to actively engage the youth in the sustainable development of the Livestock Sector to realise its full potential considering Africa is home to 85% of the world's livestock keepers but contributes to less than 3% of the global milk and meat output. @Hacodev would like to thank the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), @IOFS_Official, the @ILRI and the @UNDP for organizing such an inclusive workshop that captured input from key stakeholders, including the governments, private sector, development partners, women, and the youth.

I saw how refugees have access to healthcare, education, and play an active part in society benefiting the whole community. This is how we move from aid dependency to self-reliance. Kenya is doing its part. It needs greater international support.

The Centre was honored to participate in the Roles-ILA Research Seminar, where we presented our paper on “Youth Engagement in the IGAD Region: Good Practices and Lessons Learned in Countering Radicalization into Violent Extremism through Strategic Communication.” Aligning with the seminar’s overarching theme of Conflict Resolution in Eastern Africa, the presentation highlighted how strategic communication combined with dialogue-based approaches can address grievances, counter violent extremist narratives, and strengthen community-level conflict resolution efforts.
