"It's too late for my family, but it's not too late for other families. We shouldn't have lost our brother. This is preventable." The evidence shows we need urgent reform of the gambling industry & their marketing tactics. We need the government to act. abc.net.au/listen/programs/r…

28000 mainly younger people have signed up to the BETSTOP self exclusion register. The govt clearly are not doing enough to prevent harm from the online gambling industry occurring. A total ban on gambling marketing is an essential first step. acma.gov.au/articles/2024-08…

Ultimately the government has a choice. Follow the public health evidence and implement a gambling advertising ban to protect children. Or implement partial advertising restrictions which will protect those who profit from the gambling industry. smh.com.au/politics/federal/…

Absolutely must listen interview with ex-gambling exec Stewart Kenny and @SteveCannane on RN “If you want to protect the children, you go ahead with a total ban. If you want to protect bookmakers profits, you go ahead with a partial ban".  abc.net.au/listen/programs/r…

I was at this meeting yesterday. What we heard was incredibly disappointing and concerning. Our children deserve better than this. We will continue to advocate for ban on all forms of advertising for online gambling as recommended in the Murphy Report. theguardian.com/australia-ne…

Agreed. We need policies that support public health and wellbeing, not gambling interests.

Marketing is central to the normalisation of gambling for children. The first step in addressing this is to implement a complete ban on gambling ads. (ABC News)

I was able to be a voice for lived experience of gambling harm today at Parliament House begging the PM not to prioritise the financial discomfort of multi billion dollar corporations over the financial wellbeing of Australians. We need a TOTAL AD BAN.
Absolutely time to put people and their families first Gambling companies should not be able to prey constantly on people esp our young people with slick ads Gambling addiction is a public health crisis - causing suicides & breaking up families #auspol smh.com.au/politics/federal/…

Dr @HannahLPitt featured in the @geelongaddy today talking about new research findings that teens want action on #gambling. The study looking at young people’s attitudes to gambling harms reveals Australian teens feel strongly about the lack of action by government to protect them from a relentless flow of marketing relating to gambling and betting. Bizarre. In more than 50 years with governments, academe and NGOs nobody has ever even suggested signing non-disclosure agreements - which also now give the gambling industry an excuse to avoid responding to media.
So now if gambling reform advocates want to attend a meeting with the Minister to discuss the gambling ad proposals they have to sign a 12-page legally binding NDA. Labor’s attempts to tie gambling harm advocates into ‘ridiculous’ secret agreements. 🧵1/ theguardian.com/australia-ne…

Thanks to @SteveCannane for having me on RN to talk about the governments proposed advertising reforms. “It’s problematic that those who profit from gambling have more of a say about policy than the experts who are trying to protect the community.” ⬇️⬇️ abclisten.page.link/RfsGqMcM…
