なぜ写真を撮るのか。その問いに対して、ひとはしばしば表現のためだとか、現前したものの残響を留めるためだとか、あるいは世界を理解するためだとか答へる。しかし、それらの理由は本当に出発点なのだらうか。むしろそれらは、すでに行はれてしまつた行為に対して後から与へられた説明に過ぎないのかもしれない。 ひとは往々にして、自らの行為を理性によつて選び取つてゐると思ひたがる。だが実際には、理性は選択の原因であるよりも、その選択を正当化するための装置として機能してゐることが少なくない。写真もまた例外ではない。なぜシャッターを切るのか。その根源にあるのは理念でも思想でもなく、ただ「好きだから」としか言ひやうのない衝動である。 もちろん、その「好き」は単なる感情ではない。それは世界との関係そのものの現れである。ある者は光に惹かれ、ある者は影に惹かれ、ある者は街の雑踏に、またある者は誰もゐない静寂に惹かれる。写真とは対象を写す行為である以前に、何に心が動かされるかを暴露する行為なのである。レンズの先にあるものよりも、そのレンズを向けずにはゐられなかつた精神の方が、実のところ多くを語つてゐる。 ゆゑに、なぜ写真を撮るのかと問はれたならば、その答へは驚くほど単純である。好きだからである。それ以上でもそれ以下でもない。そして、その単純さは決して浅薄さを意味しない。むしろ人間の行為の最も深い部分は、しばしば説明不能な嗜好のうちに潜んでゐる。 芸術も思想も信仰も、究極的にはある種の偏愛から始まる。世界のすべてを等しく愛することはできない。だからこそ、ひとは何かに惹かれ、何かを選び取り、その選択の軌跡として作品を残す。写真もまた、その軌跡のひとつに過ぎない。 表現も、現前したものの残響を留めようとする試みも、あるいは世界を理解しようとする営みも、そのすべては後から与へられた意味である。ひとはまず惹かれる。そしてシャッターを切る。その後になつて初めて、自らの行為に理由を与へるのである。 そして、このことは自分だけに限られた話ではない。写真を愛する者であれば、その程度の差こそあれ、誰しも同じ構造のなかに生きてゐる。撮る理由は異なつて見えても、その根底には説明に先立つ「惹かれる」といふ経験が横たはつてゐる。だから写真について語ることは、技術について語ることではなく、世界との関係について語ることなのである。 なぜ写真を撮るのか。その問いの果てにある答へは、結局のところあまりにも素朴である。しかし、その素朴さこそが最も根源的でもある。ひとは理由があるから愛するのではない。愛してしまつたあとで理由を語るのである。写真もまた、その例外ではない。
