Over 5 million patients are admitted each year to ICUs in the US. With advances in modern medicine, ~70% survive. Many survivors experience Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS), a collection of new or worsening impairments in the cognitive, physical, or mental health realm. These impairments are often long-term, resulting in a difficult recovery journey and leaving patients feeling isolated and misunderstood. Join us for the inaugural National #Walk4PICS Day by walking any appropriate distance Saturday, September 30. icudelirium.org/internationa… #MedTwitter #nursetwitter #ICUrehab

A few folks have asked for my thoughts on Jimmy Carter’s hospice journey. Here they are, in no particular order: 1. Hospice is not a place. Folks can choose to die at home, as President Carter is.

I’m going to bottom line this so everyone understands: Save your rapid home antigen tests to test out of isolation. To detect COVID at the front end, get a lab PCR test as soon as you have symptoms or 1-2 days after a known exposure.

Why's the PCR more sensitive than home antigen? Because the PCR picks up (& amplifies) a tiny amount of virus, & thus will be positive w/ levels of virus too low to infect others. In fact, we know that the average person w/ Covid will stay antigen (home test) positive… (14/24)

(1/2) My kids have the flu & we had to “call around” to find a pharmacy stocked with tamiflu. I’m also hearing that stores are out of children’s over the counter pain relievers. Amazon is charging $30 for a two pack, back ordered till end of Dec.

(2/2) Parents are not ok & the stress of potentially not having medication for our children is a worry I never anticipated.

Protect your baby. Get vaccinated vs #covid19 if you are pregnant. Time and again this has proven safe and helpful. Consider other measures like #masks and #socialdistancing as well. Keep yourself and your baby safe!!@UWHealth @uwsmph @PublicHealthMDC @uwanesthesia
We have seen higher COVID-19 hospitalization rates among infants under the age of 6 months. If you are pregnant, getting a #COVID19 vaccine during pregnancy can protect both you and your baby.

Suicide Screening in Adolescents Do not wait for "EBM" on this one, we will have same lame guidelines for a while ("not enough evidence to support/reject screening") It's common sense, easy, & EVERY health care professional should do it for EVERY adolescent they see. /1

Hospitals are likely to be overrun with #flu, #COVID19, and #RSV. #Vaccines are available for COVID (though no bivalents for #under5s) and flu. Protect yourself and, your family, & your community. Mask if you have symptoms. We all deserve the freedom to be healthy.

The goals of care ✨are not✨ code status They're not feeding tubes Home or nursing homes The goals of care are: "What's important?" "What makes life unacceptable?" That's what we should discuss And that's what should be documented in the chart #ThisIsGeriatrics

Feedback is not about sizing people up. It's about helping them grow. 78 studies: criticism is more motivating when you (a) meet face-to-face; (b) compare behavior to a standard, not to others; (c) suggest changes to make. People want to improve when it's clear that you care.
