If you're using AI to write essays, eulogies, a text to your wife, I do think less of you as a person. Ceding your mental and creative abilities to a machine is an embarrassing thing and people should be ashamed to admit doing it in public.

The more I use ChatGPT the more I think it just can't be good that a lot of people are getting accustomed to having conversations in which they're endlessly congratulated on their great questions and repetitively told how brilliantly insightful and clever they are

“Had the Scunthorpe steelworks closed, we would have been the only country in the G7 with no virgin steelmaking capacity.” Britain should stop relying upon other nations for raw materials to hit steel targets for defence and security, discuss @HelenRPrice and @ScullyP.

Some of my writer friends say they just use AI for research – what shoes would this character wear in 1950 etc – but we need to be very wary of 'streamlining' the creative process. So many of my ideas are sparked by things I stumbled upon while conducting 'boring' manual research
to use ai for art - anything creative (to me) only shows a lack of understanding that art isn't something that should arrive perfect. The JOY of art and CREATING is the development, the journey, the mistakes that are lessons. Using your mind and time to make something beautiful.

We will end up with much more boring, uninspiring work if we remove the parts of the creative process that force you to reconsider, go in different directions, go down rabbit holes and tangents

I wrote this about the foolishness of conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxxers and enemies of democracy - those who imagine themselves the most fearless critics of modern civilization are often its most coddled children thetimes.com/comment/columni…

The funniest books I read this year: • The Restraint of Beasts by Magnus Mills — deadpan, surreal book about three livestock fencing contractors who end up killing a lot of the people they work with. • The Caravaners by Elizabeth Von Arnim — a pompous German Baron goes on a disastrous caravan holiday in Edwardian Kent. Viciously funny, I wept with laughter. • Excellent Women by Barbara Pym — her best comedy of manners. A mild-mannered vicar’s daughter becomes embroiled with her glamorous new neighbours. • Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons — a sophisticated teenager is orphaned and has to go to live with her hapless provincial relatives in rural Sussex. • The Brothers’ Lot by Kevin Holohan — the monks at a Catholic boys school in Ireland are desperate for a miracle to elevate their founder’s profile & smooth his path to sainthood. Kind of Kingsley Amis vibes.
