1/3 I live in a house or a flat. You live in a scheme or a setting. I go to the shop or for a walk in the park. You go out in the community. I get irritated and a bit shouty. You display challenging behaviour. I change my mind and decide not to go out. You are non-compliant.

With World Down Syndrome Day next week, itโ€™s great to see the stories of people โ€˜smashing the stereotypesโ€™ showing their achievements with pride. Quite right too with people acting, passing exams, working in paid employment; they should feel proud.

What Iโ€™m not seeing is the less flashy stuff. The, I can let people know how I feel. I learned to walk. I can put my own tshirt on. I learned my address. I can write my name.

Each person with DS is unique, just like the rest of the population and everyoneโ€™s list of achievements is different. Some donโ€™t get made into snazzy videos or make for a snappy sound bite they are equally important to be proud of. #DownSyndrome #SmashingTheStereotypes

Looking forward to reading this once Iโ€™ve backed it with some blown vinyl wallpaper. Itโ€™s arrival today prompted me to dig out my book of assembly bangers ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒฐ โœˆ๏ธ โ˜๏ธ ๐Ÿฅง Time for a reminisceโ€ฆ @RetirementTales

Thank you for sharing the message @PaulaMc007 Itโ€™s two years since I wrote this and it resonates more than ever sadly. The impact it would have if we all changed our language and therefore our mindsets. Itโ€™s so simple, when you think about it.
#Oliverscampaign Letโ€™s all stop & think about this for one moment The narrative matters

3/3 The language we use matters and examples like these reinforce the โ€˜otheringโ€™ of people with learning disabilities. The knock on effect is that we see people who have learning disabilities as different or somehow less than. I am human. You are human.

#NationalSiblingsDay2023 and this yearโ€™s theme is #SiblingStrengths Our sibling strength is that we lift each other up every day with resilience, understanding and love. We also finish each otherโ€™s sentences. #NationalSiblingDay #Sibs #StillFighting #BigSist @Sibs_uk

People with intellectual disabilities need attention. We all need attention. When we see attention seeking behavior we should respond with more interest not less. Think communication. Not irritation.

Wow, thatโ€™s a lot of likes - though I shouldnโ€™t be surprised that this resonates with so many people. Itโ€™s so sad and so bloody frustrating because it really doesnโ€™t need to be this hard. I feel a little less alone than I did before I wrote this so thatโ€™s something โ™ฅ๏ธ

Thank you to everyone for their supportive comments (not so much the couple of super-weird DMโ€™s)

Every family of a disabled child or young person is different. What unites us is the endless struggle for decent services and support.
