During WWII, Jews in Budapest were brought to the edge of the Danube, ordered to remove their shoes, and shot, falling into the water below. Sixty pairs of iron shoes now line the river's bank, creating a ghostly memorial to the victims. This memorial is known as 'Shoes on the Danube Promenade' and was created by Can Togay and Gyula Pauer.

In 1961, a woman from Cheshire went missing, but the case soon went cold. 22 years later, a body was pulled from a nearby peat bog; thinking he'd been caught, her husband confessed to killing her and throwing her in the bog. Later analysis showed the remains were 1600 years old.
