I am very excited to have received an Amsterdam UMC Startstipendium grant! With this grant, I will set up a new study on premenstrual exacerbation (PME) in depression: the TIDE project. A short thread on PME and the project 🧵:

With the TIDE project, I hope we can gain a better understanding of how many people with depression suffer from premenstrual exacerbation of their symptoms. We will also study whether it is clinically relevant for treatment providers to do daily symptom tracking across the cycle.

So proud of our symposium yesterday at @wpath on psychosocial and social health outcomes after gender-affirming hormones. Amazing presentations from @NessaMillet1 @HormonoGo from @AffirmRelation and @DrBrendanNolan1. This work is so important to healthcare equity for trans people

We measured variability through calculation of the iSD, meaning the within-measurement SD of the day-to-day affect outcomes. As shown below, participants with the same mean affect level can show large differences in affect variability when assessing the iSD.

Since we're still in the preprint phase, let us know if you have any thoughts on the study! Happy to talk about any improvements we could make in the manuscript 💡.

This study was partially intended as a pilot study for the work we will do in the Affirm Relationships project, in which we will study social and psychological well-being using more diary-style and EMA measuremements. Make sure to follow @AffirmRelation to stay up to date 📣!

In the RESTED study, we asked participants to complete daily diaries, which included items on negative mood. Using these items, we assessed whether day-to-day variability in reported negative affect showed changes after 3 and 12 months of gender-affirming hormones.

Affect variability is the degree to which our emotions fluctuate over time. Trans people have reported changes in emotionality after starting gender-affirming hormones, including “flattening” of emotions after masculinizing hormones and deeper emotions after feminizing hormones.
