Giant marquees like this are such a great way to sell a movie. I can only imagine being one of those tiny figures on the sidewalk with PSYCHO towering over me. It must have made the movie feel like a big event!

It’s the 40th anniversary of Back to School, which features one of the best meta jokes ever. Rodney Dangerfield hires Kurt Vonnegut to write a paper about Kurt Vonnegut… and Sally Kellerman gives it an F, saying the writer “doesn’t know the first thing about Kurt Vonnegut.”

I just admitted to one of my most embarrassing moments on BlueSky and figured I’d do so here, too!

I was very proud of my joke here and then I scrolled a tiny bit and discovered somebody beat me to the punch. Always a bridesmaid… (I’m not really upset, to be clear!)

Also: as much as I really like ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, I think LITTLE BIG LEAGUE is even better. It’s funny, it’s grounded (which is really impressive considering its premise), and it respects its audience’s intelligence. It deserved more critical and commercial success than it got!
I’m not gonna pretend that ROOKIE OF THE YEAR is a masterpiece, but it has plenty of good qualities! This time around, I really appreciated how much the movie cares about the adults, rare for a kids’ movie. Amy Morton and Gary Busey’s story threads are interesting and satisfying!

And the final act is really clever and inventive. I can’t think of another baseball movie I’ve seen that does what ROOKIE OF THE YEAR does with its final game!

I've posted about The Cascades before, but I was just listening to this song and thinking about how beautiful it is. Therefore, it's getting shared! youtu.be/EU1dQCgkhd8?si=wDsx…

Maybe their harmonies aren't as complex as The Beach Boys, but every one of their songs are as smooth as vanilla ice cream and they also do some interesting things with music and sound effects. The Cascades are overdue for a major re-discovery! youtu.be/lWsOwgGbS-Q?si=h2xe…

Here's the one Cascades song that oldies stations regularly play. I'll share it too, because it's pretty. I've loved it since kid-hood! youtu.be/U0DbYAaZcwU?si=3hZL…

I love that Spielberg deeply relates to Hammond but also understands him to both be a bit of a huckster as well as the possible downfall of civilization as we know it. It’s been fun revisiting Spielberg and realizing he’s fascinatingly fucked up
This is probably my favourite scenes from Jurassic Park. If the movie was made today this scene probably wouldn’t have made it in and I think that’s a real shame

For me, these two movies are proof positive that remakes deserve a shot. That's my way of saying that I think these are better than the original movies! The Spencer Tracy films feel cold and formal; these films are warm, appealing comfort food (for me, anyway)!

(I just finished rewatching the sequel on Netflix, which is why I'm thinking about this!)
