I love it when I come across these rootsweb amateur genealogy websites from the early 2000s

“I don’t see anything wrong with this”
americans blindly idolize “european cuisine”, but the reality is that outside france and italy and spain, the whole swathe of europe, from england and the low countries into the german lands and all the way to the far baltic and endless slavdom, *this* is the norm

I could make the effort to have actual decent lunches while I am slogging through the work week but it doesn’t feel appropriate. Gas station food seems to be the natural choice for the occasion.

Many efforts are made by Declining Iowan Small Cities to spur growth but none of these initiatives ever really pan out. No matter how hard a declining industrial town like Mason City tries to rebrand as a “hub for arts, culture & recreation”, the population just keeps shrinking
The thing about “cheap house posts” is that the “best deals” are always in places where the only halfway decent reason to be there is if you were born there & have strong family/social ties there. The odds of there ever being any sort of Ottumwa, IA renaissance are extremely slim

Of course many of these efforts do lead to cosmetic and quality-of-life improvements but none of these places can ever find a way to attract the coveted “young professional families” demographic, or even simply keep people from moving away. It doesn’t happen.

There are nice places to live in Iowa that are more or less appealing to a fairly wide variety of types, but those places are priced accordingly.
