Hours after Japan and the Philippines announced maritime delimitation talks east of Taiwan, Beijing launched a law enforcement operation in those exact waters.
The message: you don't draw lines in our sea without us at the table.
China's Foreign Ministry was direct; any EEZ or continental shelf deal in that area legally requires China as a party under UNCLOS.
Japan and the Philippines disagree. So do most Western governments.
The deeper issue is that China is now using enforcement operations the way other countries use diplomatic protests. Less paperwork, more presence.
With Taiwan already the region's biggest flashpoint, a 3-way maritime dispute on its eastern flank is the last thing the Indo-Pacific needed right now.
