Researchers have developed a new class of painkillers based on the 'love molecule' oxytocin to treat pain caused by IBS & IBD. Abdominal pain affects 15% of adults & and this new drug promises few side effects unlike anti-inflammatories & opioids. 🔗 bit.ly/48QTmnX

If you have a spare 15 min, in honour of World AMR Awareness Week (#WAAW) here's a great documentary on how antibiotic misuse in food production is helping to drive antimicrobial resistance (with a few quotes in my messy office). @IMBatUQ @COADD_news @UQ_News @AAMRNet_
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) - where microbes such as bacteria and parasites evolve to resist the drugs designed to eliminate them - is now a critical global threat. The situation has been worsened by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in both healthcare and agriculture. Yes, there is antibiotics in your food and water - and that is helping microbes develop a resistance. Without effective antimicrobials, routine medical procedures, surgeries, and treatments for chronic diseases could become incredibly risky. Sir Alexander Fleming, who discovered penicillin in 1928, warned even then that misuse of antibiotics could lead to resistant strains. This prediction is now our grim reality. Yet countries and industries still lack strong mechanisms to curb this antibiotic use. If things continue without attention the world could be looking at 10 million deaths per year through AMR by 2050. Is it time to declare AMR as the new pandemic? Or do we still have hope? #goodfoodmovement #antibiotics #AMR
