Roman Republican denarius showing citizens voting. One toga-clad citizen drops his voting tablet in the ballot box, while behind him another voter receives his tablet from an attendant below. Voters crossed elevated walkways or 'pontes' above their fellow citizens in order to reach the ballot box, so all could see that they had voted without any last-minute intimidation or interference by others. To safeguard the integrity of elections, in 119 BC, the tribune Gaius Marius further narrowed the pons causeway leading to the ballot box, in order to prevent any non-voters from standing on the gangway and engaging in bribery or intimidation; literally, to ensure that there was 'no room' for interference. Denarius struck under the moneyer Publius Licinius Nerva in 112 BC, British Museum Collection

This amphoriskos (perfume bottle) made of banded agate is a rarity. Symbols of wealth and sophistication, used as diplomatic gifts and kept as heirlooms in antiquity and later. Imitations were made in glass and pottery. Roman, late 1st c. BCE–early 1st c. CE #MetMuseum πŸ“Έ me

Lovely ancient cups made by highly-skilled Minoan potters some 3,800 years ago! Some cups have such delicately thin walls they are known as β€˜eggshell’ ware. During the Bronze Age, these luxury ceramics were in demand outside Crete. I think they’d be popular in today’s world too! Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Crete. πŸ“· my own #Archaeology

A #Roman glass flask, decorated with 'snake threads' trailing around it. It was made in the Rhineland about 1700-1800 years ago & ended up being placed in a tomb - one of the reasons it survives in such beautiful condition #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology #AncientGlass

A #Roman #glass flask in the shape of a #fish. We don't know what flasks in the shape fishes were used for. Maybe the shape relates to the content (garum/fish sauce),maybe they were used to hold oil. On display at Pierides Museum, Larnaka, Cyprus. Photo: Jeff Amadon via Flickr

Sipping my coffee β˜•οΈ and thinking about these marvellous Minoan cups! They look so modern it’s incredible to think they were created by Bronze Age potters some 3,800 years ago! This type of Minoan pottery is known as Kamares Ware. Kamares Ware vessels are said to have been used in palace banquets, perhaps used for consumption of alcohol. Analysis of organic residues from ancient Cretan pottery has detected resin-flavoured wine. My photo taken Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Crete. #Archaeology
