Communities have been gutted over years of disinvestment, hollowing out, and closures. Online networks have stepped in and filled that vacuum. Something must be done to break this cycle.

Once again, we are seeing a tragic event being exploited by the far right - this time in Belfast - to sow division, target people of colour and incite violence. Something has to change. Here's our response 👇

🔨Unblocking barriers to sports-led regeneration would be ground breaking for the North. Any Olympic games would mean we'd need venues, transport, jobs, housing... 🤸But communities must be part of plans from the jump to truly transform our region. chroniclelive.co.uk/news/nor…

Communities deserve high streets they can trust. Local leaders should be given the long term fiscal levers to prioritise the needs of their neighbourhoods - putting that vital decision making closer to the source. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq5p…

🏗️The PM has backed northern mayors to build. And it's about time, Leeds has been waiting 30 years for a tram. Now we must go further: let mayors keep a share of what they earn when their economies grow. 🏘️That's how you really get Britain building. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3w2…

Can hosting big sporting tournaments like the Open bring benefits for the North? They can, but only if communities and regions are considered from the beginning. Here's @northernmaeve for @BBCNWT 👇

London’s Olympic stadium cost £800m to convert. Sadiq Khan called it “the worst deal…imaginable.” Manchester’s? £42m. The North knows how to do legacy - and a Northern Olympics would be transformative Read more from @myrtleboat in the @FT today ⤵️ ft.com/content/a43a86f3-5176…

Our analysis of the latest NEET figures just released by the ONS finds two concerning trends: 1⃣ The number of young people who are NEET could rise from around one in eight today to one in six by the end of 2029. 2⃣ The recent rise has been driven mainly by young people who are economically inactive — meaning they are not in work and are not currently looking for work — rather than unemployed young people who are actively seeking a job. Three in five NEET young people are inactive, and this group accounts for two-thirds of the increase since 2021. We're wasting a generation’s talent, skill, and potential. The government must act urgently, so that young people are supported to live a life of opportunity, that gives them a sense of self-worth.

📈The North just got a big investment boost... £120 million of investment unlocked in Manchester; 4,000 jobs backed in Durham; 1,600 homes in Sheffield, stuff communities have waited years for. PLUS CX doubled down on her commitment to a fiscal devolution roadmap by Autumn...

For fiscal devo to deliver, it needs to: ➡️ Give mayors a share of the taxes they generate, so they are rewarded for investing in growth ➡️ Build in tools for every type of economy, not just what works in GMCA or Birmingham ➡️ Redistribute, so poorer areas aren’t left behind

Equalising Capital Gains Tax (CGT) with Income Tax is a no brainer. Here's why: 👉 It would raise around £14bn a year. 👉 It is only paid by around 0.65% of the adult population (350,000 people), but most CGT revenue only comes from the 0.02% of the population who make gains of over £1 million. 👉 Politicians of all stripes believe it is fair to tax work and wealth the same. It was famously pro-growth Conservative chancellor Nigel Lawson who equalised CGT with income tax rates in the first place. 👉 A cleaner going to work should not pay more tax than someone who gets their income from shares or investments. 👉 It's a tax rise that wouldn't hamper growth, investment or entrepreneurialism. It is a tax rise supported by millionaires (@PatMillsUK).
