This perplexing chip is just like an electronic circuit board, but instead of electrons, it's full of light (photons) AND it's around the size of a fingernail! This #scienceweek we're sharing the beauty of the science of light (AKA #photonics!) ✨ bit.ly/3AXFZjG

Amazing #scicomm from our Data Communications Team Leader about the Optus outage yesterday. Have a read and let's start the hashtag #sproink!
SciComm efforts sometimes come up with the most amusing quotes ... news.com.au/technology/onlin… ... here's me trying to communicate in simple terms how Optus' had a bad day.

Well done to the team @MarkoPerestjuk, @ArnanMitchell & @andy_boes on their article in @aplphotonics that combines the benefits of mid-infrared light (great for sensing) and integrated photonics (great for making things smaller). A true team effort!
If we can make sensors more sensitive, yet smaller, we can use them for breath analysis in health care, monitoring air quality, or defence. Today our article in @aplphotonics brings this reality one step closer. Read more: doi.org/10.1063/5.0149324

Using organoids on a tiny chip to develop better chemotherapies - stay tuned for more of our Postdoc's @Crispin_szydzik's research!
Excited to be in Adelaide for @anznmf2023 . Just presented my work on organoid research platforms for improving chemotherapeutic outcomes - many interesting talks to come!

Drones spraying wheat crops, monitoring bushfires, or delivering groceries to your door - these applications aren't too far away, but all require precise location measurement without GPS. Optical gyroscopes provide a solution. Read more in @PhotonicsSpec photonicsspectra-digital.com…

For its potential in remotely detecting the ripeness of fruit, and for moon navigation, lithium niobate is a material to be reckoned with in integrated photonics. Our Director @ArnanMitchell will be giving a tutorial at the @OFCConference on Tues 7 March. ofcconference.org/en-us/home…

As we continually try to fit more complexity into smaller spaces – like our shrinking phones & computers – tiny ‘artificial sheets’ called metasurfaces may offer a solution. Find out more in an online workshop with Thomas Pertsch @UniJena tomorrow! eventbrite.com.au/e/nanostru…

Our guest speaker @That_Laser_Lady from @IPASadelaide spoke at our InPAC workshop about trying to detect the cancer biomarkers in our breath (the same dogs can detect); and atomic clocks that can measure the excitement of atoms for deep space navigation.

And a great quote in @That_Laser_Lady's talk about the current state of our most accurate clocks (atomic clocks)... If we are to use these clocks for deep space navigation or defence, we need them to be smaller and robust, whilst also maintaining their accuracy and complexity.
