Farewell to Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie (1929-2023) - pioneering historian of the French peasantry and climate, leading figure of the Annales School, and one of the great masters of micro-history. A great loss to scholarship and public life.

Sad news tonight of the passing of Prof Michael Baillie, late Professor Emeritus of Palaeoecology at Queen's University, Belfast. The pioneer of dendrochronology, a terrific scholar of international renown, a kindly, witty man. Our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

More and more rubbish. Laura did not call for braverman to be sacked, since shapps canโ€™t do that. But all the tories interviewed seem to pretend they know nothing about the spat in their party about her prejudicial views.

Am I wrong? Isnโ€™t the main wreath laying today, Remembrance Sunday? So the footage of that shown below is from last year?
Left: Rishi Sunak lays a wreath at the Cenotaph Right: Far right protesters attacking police near the Cenotaph just before the Armistice day events began The sunlit uplands of world-beating Brexit Britain. This is what populism does to countries. Shame on politicians who divide communities.

Now this a fascinating monument signed by the mason Robert cox, both his mark and his initials. Gothic architectural features. Stylistically very similar to a chimney piece in kenilworth castle, where he is recorded as working for Robert Dudley in the 1570s.

Oh how sad. I remember as a teenager writing a letter about the Wesley chapel in Hartlepool and itโ€™s fate. I just hope there is enough left to save.
Bad news. The Wesley Chapel in Hartlepool caught fire yesterday. It was being renovated to become a hotel. It is one of our Top Ten Endangered Buildings. itv.com/news/tyne-tees/2023-โ€ฆ

The Vasa was a Swedish warship that unfortunately sank just about 20 minutes into its first voyage in 1628. It holds the unique status of being the only 17th century ship completely recovered in its original form. 1/2

Hereโ€™s my print of Library of Birmingham showing off its gorgeous patterned cladding. Elegantly shaped like a stack of books, the Library of Birmingham is one of the most popular visitor attractions in the UK. brumhaus.uk/products/libraryโ€ฆ

The timbers from which this part of the commandery was built were felled in the 1470s (tree ring dating)
A section of the late fifteenth century wall paintings at The Commandery, Worcester - discovered in 1935 under a layer of whitewash. The โ€˜painted chamberโ€™ is believed to date back to the time of the Hospital of St Wulfstan. #wallsonwednesday

Well worth rescuing: but it doesnโ€™t need any spurious history. The 1520s is the wrong date. Apart from anything else the framing style is much later. And the evidence of the building itself suggests a house or a small inn. A great survivor from early Birmingham.
Great stuff. Lovely building rescued when demolished due to city centre road widening. Framing characteristic of c1575-1610. Hope it will be fully repaired after some great local campaigning.

I donโ€™t understand some of the comments. The provenance suggests it was on the art market. Then inherited. Then back on the market arriving in uk in 19th century. Purchased national gallery in 1906 and then damaged by suffragettes. Why should it be sent back to Spain now?
At just before 11am this morning (6 November 2023) two people entered Room 30 of the National Gallery. The pair appeared to strike The Toilet of Venus (โ€˜The Rokeby Venusโ€™) by Velรกzquez with what appeared to be emergency rescue hammers. The room was cleared of visitors and police were called. Officers are now on the scene. Two people have been arrested. The painting is now being removed from display so it can be examined by Conservators.

The letter W is often written that way: far too often claimed as a Marian symbol. As for the rest above the door it is like a monogram or merchants mark incorporating the letter S like that in the left hand spandrel. Arch not โ€œas builtโ€ but result of latter settlement.
Love a #WonkyDoor and this is a corker. It's been wonky from birth carved with asymmetric shoulders. As interesting as the door surround is the inscription above (cheeky little zoom in here), typical C16 W (often mixed up with a Marian mark) but what is the symbol above it? TTM๐Ÿญ

Mildly disappointing not to recognise cultural and intangible history to a slightly greater degree.
