⛰️Hilltop landing🌴 Many airstrips in Papua eventually expand enough to become sealed runways which is sad for us bush pilots but useful for the local villagers who then benefit from larger aircraft which reduces the cost of items bought in my air 💸

🛬 Landing at 7500ft ⛰️ Ilaga is one of the busier airstrips in the highlands of Papua with daily flights coming in from all over the province. This Twin Otter barely needs the 600m of runway available which is impressive considering the density altitude here 👌🏻

🔥Hot, high and steep⛰️ Wipon at 8000ft elevation in equatorial Papua, offers a deceptive challenge for bush pilots. The landing ground speed is increased by 15-20kts thanks to anabatic winds and its high elevation and warm climate. At lease the 24% slope slows you down fast 😱

⛰️Take-off, descend and turn to stay visual 🥵 It’s not often these sorts of manoeuvres are required but it’s all part of the bush pilot’s armoury 🛠️ The Pilatus Porter is ideal for this being a neutrally stable aircraft and so very manoeuvrable for its size 👌🏻

⛰️Getting it down in a tight valley👌🏻 Sometimes airstrips in Papua aren’t just on the side of a mountain but also down in the valley meaning one you get onto final approach there’s no go-around option. Not for the faint of heart! 😳

👀When you realise how steep the airstrip is 😳 Landing uphill is par for the courses in Papua and Dadou is up there as one of the steeper ones at 20% slope at the top. The cloud layer on this approach just adds to the spiciness 🌶️

Just found out the C-17 can dump thrust reversers IN FLIGHT for assault landings and my A350/787/A320 brain is absolutely broken 🤯 I’ve been elbow-deep in commercial birds for years and the idea of popping reversers at 10,000 ft feels like straight-up witchcraft. Military guys, is this normal for you or is the Globemaster just built different?
