The Akagera River, shown in this photograph taken at the historic Rusumo Border, forms part of the boundary between Rwanda (the side with eucalyptus trees) and Tanzania (the opposite mountainous side). The river and the surrounding hills on the Rwandan side hold significant historical importance in Rwandaโ€™s history. During the anti-Tutsi pogroms of the 1960s, some Tutsi were killed, and some of their bodies were thrown into the Akagera River. Decades later, during the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda, the river was again used to dispose of the bodies of victims, many of whom were carried downstream through Uganda toward Lake Victoria. ๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘Ž, ๐‘ข๐‘› ๐‘‘๐‘’๐‘ข๐‘–๐‘™ ๐‘–๐‘š๐‘๐‘œ๐‘ ๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘๐‘™๐‘’: ๐‘’๐‘“๐‘“๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’๐‘š๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ก ๐‘’๐‘ก ๐‘ก๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’๐‘  ๐‘๐‘ฆ ๐ท๐‘Ž๐‘‘๐‘ฆ ๐‘‘๐‘’ ๐‘€๐‘Ž๐‘ฅ๐‘–๐‘š๐‘œ ๐‘€๐‘ค๐‘–๐‘๐‘–๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž-๐‘€๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘–, ๐‘Ž ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘œ๐‘˜ ๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘ฃ๐‘–๐‘’๐‘ค (๐‘–๐‘› ๐ธ๐‘›๐‘”๐‘™๐‘–๐‘ โ„Ž), by Zoe Norridge muse.jhu.edu/pub/8/article/8โ€ฆ ๐‘…๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘Ž, ๐‘ˆ๐‘› ๐ท๐‘’๐‘ข๐‘–๐‘™ ๐ผ๐‘š๐‘๐‘œ๐‘ ๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘๐‘™๐‘’: ๐ธ๐‘“๐‘“๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’๐‘š๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ก ๐ธ๐‘ก ๐‘‡๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’๐‘ , by Dady de Maximo Mwicira-Mitali (@DadydeMaximo) amazon.com/stores/Dady-de-Maโ€ฆ #SiteOfMemory #Atlas #DigitalMemory

Behind Her Silence is an emotional and inspiring novel that follows the journey of Isimbi, a young girl raised in the peaceful hills of Rubavu, Rwanda, whose dreams lead her to the busy city of Kigali. Beneath her quiet strength and determination lies a hidden struggle shaped by fear, emotional pain, loneliness and the silent battles many people face behind their smiles. As Isimbi grows through love, sacrifice, friendship and difficult experiences, she slowly discovers the importance of courage, self-worth and healing. This story explores themes of hope, resilience, identity, emotional wounds, family and the power of kindness in a world where many suffer in silence. Through powerful storytelling and deeply human emotions, Behind Her Silence reminds readers that every silence hides a story, every smile may conceal pain and even the most broken hearts can still find healing, strength and light again. ๐Š๐ข๐›๐š๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐›๐š ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐Ÿ๐ข๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž (๐ต๐‘’โ„Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐ป๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘†๐‘–๐‘™๐‘’๐‘›๐‘๐‘’: ๐ต๐‘’โ„Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐ธ๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ ๐‘†๐‘–๐‘™๐‘’๐‘›๐‘๐‘’ ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ ๐ผ๐‘  ๐‘Ž ๐‘†๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ ๐‘๐‘œ ๐‘‚๐‘›๐‘’ ๐พ๐‘›๐‘œ๐‘ค๐‘ ) Get your copy here: amazon.com/BEHIND-HER-SILENCโ€ฆ #CreativeWriting #Fiction #Storytelling #DigitalMemory

โ€œOn April 7, 2009, the day of the national mourning, thousands of people walked for miles in a somber procession to the genocide memorial. Folks lined up to enter the bone chamber. I was startled to see that they not only paid tribute to the victims, but some had to open the caskets to look at the bleached bones. Fifteen years later, it was still too much to bear. But somehow through the piercing pains and howls, healing began.โ€ ๐„๐ฑ๐œ๐ž๐ซ๐ฉ๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐‹๐ข๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐˜๐ž๐กโ€™๐ฌ ๐“๐ž๐ ๐“๐š๐ฅ๐ค โ€œ๐น๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘š ๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘˜๐‘’๐‘› ๐‘ก๐‘œ ๐‘คโ„Ž๐‘œ๐‘™๐‘’โ€ Source: theharvardadvocate.com/conteโ€ฆ On Photo: ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘“๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘š๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘… #SitesOfMemory #Rugerero #Rwanda #Art4Memory #DigitalMemory

One of the key lessons we learned from our โ€œ๐‘€๐‘ข๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘™ ๐‘…๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘ƒ๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘“๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘๐‘’,โ€ co-organized last month with Page Rwanda (@PageRwanda) and Memory Keepers Association โ€“ Baho, was the importance of a ๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐š๐œ๐ก in engaging young people in the memorialization process. Feedback from both young people and parents highlighted childrenโ€™s curiosity, as well as their uncertainty about what to ask and how to ask their parents about the past. At the same time, many parents expressed concerns about what to share and how to speak with their children about their experiences. We observed that the combination of art, oral storytelling, and writing helped open up these difficult yet important conversations. By creating a safe and engaging space for dialogue, the initiative facilitated the intergenerational transmission of the memory of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda while helping families navigate sensitive memories and deep emotional wounds with care and empathy. #GenocideEducation #DigitalMemory
