Just a few weeks ago, Mr. @BitiTendai, a comrade and human rights lawyer in Zimbabwe, was speaking out strongly condemning our brutal persecution by the Museveni regime following the sham Jan. 2026 election. Unfortunately, as I type this, he has joined the long list of comrades in Africa unfairly detained by their governments for seeking freedom. Biti was arrested alongside other freedom fighters in Zimbabwe for resisting attempts to extend the presidential term there to seven years and restrict the election of the President to members of Parliament only. It is disturbing to see this script, which Ugandans are already familiar with, being deployed in Zimbabwe as well. Biti's arrest is a cowardly attack on all citizens of Zimbabwe by a regime that cannot sustain open debate about their future without resorting to brute force. I call for his immediate, unconditional release together with the colleagues detained with him. The people of Zimbabwe deserve freedom, and leaders chosen by them. The struggle continues!

Good morning from Ukraine. I live in Kyiv and travel the country often and spend most of my time engaging Ukrainians and I am also learning Ukrainian langauge and pay attention to Ukrainian social media and news sites to practice my language skills. Here's what I can tell you: Most Ukrainians, even those who do not like him and want him gone, are standing in support of him. Let me show you an example. Thread

The time has come to start considering a broad coalition of willing for just peace in Ukraine. “Peace” on terms of the aggressor is called a capitulation and would only encourage all current and future aggressors. Free world must stand up to the evil.

🔸JUST AN OBSERVATION. This post is the biggest insult to Zimbabweans. Zimbabweans are world-famous for taking personal responsibility, being resilient and always making a plan to plug the holes created by Govt’s unending failures. You fail to deliver electricity, we buy solar panels. You fail to deliver water, we drill boreholes or buy water from private dealers. You fail to deliver an environment conducive for job creation, we emigrate and do whatever work we can to survive. You fail to deliver a stable economy, the diaspora brings in the forex needed to keep things afloat. You fail to ensure traffic lights work, vendors and homeless children direct traffic. You fail to deliver a functional public transport system, we create our own private taxis. You fail to deliver decent healthcare, we resort to private health institutions. You fail to deliver decent public education, parents spend hard earned fees on extra lessons to salvage the calamity. You fail to maintain roads for decades, communities come together to fund the patching of potholes. You fail to deliver a decent TV station, we get satellite tv. You fail to build enough schools, citizens build their own private institutions. You fail to create an environment where manufacturers can thrive, we import vehicles. You fail to protect wetlands, citizens do whatever they can to become conservationists. You fail to secure lives and property, citizens create neighbourhood watches. Although the people try, nothing can detract from the duty of the state to perform the functions of Govt. This post is an admission that you’ve failed . It’s a mess. We need new leaders.🇿🇼
JUST AN OBSERVATION In our lives, where does our personal responsibilities for our lives begin and end?Are we not entirely responsible for how our lives turn out? Are we not often too quick to blame parents, Govt or spouses for our circumstances? Are we not displaying a tendency of externalizing blame and internalizing credit? I think, our choices and actions shape our lives and not other people.

🔸There is a reason why our esteemed forebears called it a War of Liberation and not a War of Decolonisation. The guiding principle was to free the masses from all forms of repression and not simply to move them from Jail A to Jail B. It is not liberation if one violent oppressor is replaced by another. Liberation means one man, one vote - not stolen elections. Liberation means freedom from state-sponsored violence - not replacing a violent Rhodesian Special Branch with your own violent police force. Liberation means gutsaruzhinji (everyone must eat) - not replacing colonial elites who eat alone with Zanu PF elites who eat alone. Liberation means respecting the rights and liberties of every citizen - not replacing the repressive Law and Order Maintenance Act with your own repressive POSA or MOPA. Liberation means ensuring every person has a decent life and equal access to freedom, fairness and opportunity. The current state of affairs is a slap in the face to our true heroes who fought and lost their lives for the dream of a better Zimbabwe. You may not respect us, but can you at least respect those who died to destroy what you now represent? It’s a mess. We need new leaders.🇿🇼

🔸Zimbabweans don’t want a violent white dictatorship or a violent black dictatorship. We simply want a nation where every citizen has freedom, fairness and opportunity. We want a country that works for the many and not the few. We want a country where everyone can access clean tap water. We want a country with no load shedding. We want a country where farms are productive and we are the breadbasket of the region and not a basket case. We want a country with a stable economy and can thrive in business without needing political connections. We want a country where the gold, diamonds and lithium resources benefit the nation not just those at the top. We want a country where garbage is collected efficiently. We want a country where the common person is better today than they were prior to 1980. We want a country where the Govt is not at war with its people but gives everyone the space to thrive. We want a country where we don’t have to swim across the Limpopo for a decent life. We want a country where access to affordable, quality healthcare and education are a luxury reserved for elites. We want a country where we are not jailed for challenging bad policies. We want a country where the police don’t persecute us but where they serve and protect us. We want a country where working hard and getting a good education will guarantee a decent job, food on the table and roof over our heads. We want a country where we leave because we want to not because we are forced to because of the broken economy. We want a country where people don’t live in fear for speaking truth to power. We want the country that those who fought sincerely for Zimbabwe’s liberation had in mind when they sacrificed so much. We want a country where those in charge are ethical, competent and put the people first. We need new leaders.🇿🇼

We need you to get your house in order and properly prepare for 2028. It’s not easy to remove a dominant party and it requires a strong Nehemiah strategy. Faith with one hand and action with the other. We cannot have one family running a whole country. Zimbabwe is not a Mnangagwa franchise.

If there's anything that politicians need to learn from Botswana Elections, is that Voting Patterns are changing. Youth don't care about "struggle credentials" or past glory. We were not there, and we can't eat those things. We are here and now. Ga e Jeke! #BotswanaDecides2024

This is not a highly educated middle-class professional, this is a man from a village in Zimbabwe, yet the clarity of his views is sharp, driven by thought and empowered by social media, which has allowed people to bypass traditional state propaganda institutions when accessing information. He reminds us that the liberation struggle’s clarion call was for a better life for all. He asks if life has truly improved for the majority of Zimbabweans. He discusses how ZANUPF and Mnangagwa have left the economy in ruins, and he draws a comparison between the children of the ZANUPF political elite, who study in Western countries, and the children in Zimbabwe, who remain in a broken system. He asserts that this is not about colonialism, pointing out that other formerly colonised countries have succeeded with strong leadership. He revisits the history of slavery and discusses how it would not have occurred without the connivance of African leaders at the time. He points out that it was the African political elite who captured their fellow Africans and sold them, often for trivial goods such as a bottle of whisky, as he remarks.

We know only Hopewell has the best reasoning capacity the rest of us don’t. But the point stands, if you want protests, then you have to be willing to actively participate. It’s egregious to think that your job is to only point out what others should do.
