After 4.5 years we have taken the decision to shut Inside Academia down (our talks will continue). Operating a 1 person voluntary venture has been a lot (a lot) of work, but I hope that we managed to improve the culture around mental health in academia We hope to be back soon!

This sort of thing troubles me, a fair amount The focus of a post doc, PhD, MSc, or any research, should not be papers. Research is about discovery, trial & error, troubleshooting &, most importantly development & learning Focus on those, and inevitably the papers will follow…

Change is happening (I think, I hope), but is it happening quick enough. A mental-health crisis is gripping science — toxic research culture is to blame nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

Had a lovely chat with @shoreseashell and the @earth_youth discussing some of the research we do, career trajectories and the work @InsideAcademic has been doing on mental health in the academic world. Check it out below!
New interview now on our site! @RobbySeaborne shares his story in science research and talks about 'Inside Academia', a platform he founded focused on #mentalhealth in the #academic space, empowering and supporting both young and current researchers💡 bit.ly/3WxX0uV

Not too sure I am fond of the terminology, but the idea that academics/researchers are taking back control of their work-life arrangements is great. Fed up and burnt out: ‘quiet quitting’ hits academia nature.com/articles/d41586-0…

A lot of comments in this thread. Personally, I think ‘paying’ PhDs a non-living amount of money is one of the more serious problems within the system. Bare in mind. PhDs will be expected/required, to do teaching, marking etc & won’t be paid a penny for it…
Paying PhDs £10k a year and expect them to work, do research, get papers out, teach, ‘engage’, and finish in 3y is simply everything that’s wrong with academia. PhD candidates are skilled individuals, pay them fairly for their time and skills. #AcademicChatter

Awesome illustration on the salary of PhD students. Nordic countries provide the best living conditions to PhD students! We need to provide ideal living conditions to these talented people worldwide, not just in a few countries! #phdlife #PhD @InsideAcademic @AcademicsSay
A fantastic summary plot about the average PhD salary, cost of living and their ratio for different countries. Unsurprisingly in Spain (and in many other countries) a PhD stipend is below the cost of living. #phdchat #PhDVoice #AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter

… and people wonder why PhDs are so stressful and pressurised? Part of the reason being that the majority of researchers are struggling to live, let alone do work.

We are always here to offer support. Academia (and life) can be a very harsh and fragile place at times. Speaking and talking about what you’re going through can help. Enormously! #AcademicMentalHealth
As we head into another uncertain period, a reminder of how fragile life can be, how important it is to talk & how big a part we all play in supporting those around us If anyone needs support or just to talk, I’m always free to chat! Just drop me a message #MentalHealthMatters
