Yet once Israel responds militarily, much of the international focus shifts almost immediately away from the side initiating the attacks and toward the country attempting to stop them.

They beat them to death with iron bars and shovels in broad daylight as spectators laughed, cheered, and lifted children onto their shoulders for a better view. Lithuania had a long history of antisemitic violence — pogroms and riots stretching back decades under Russian rule and intensifying in the interwar years. When the Nazis arrived, many Lithuanians saw it as an opportunity to settle old scores. Radical nationalists, auxiliary police, and ordinary citizens eagerly initiated pogroms, rounded up Jews, and carried out torture and murder with such enthusiasm that it sometimes shocked even the Germans. Result: Lithuania lost 95–96% of its Jewish population — among the highest extermination rates in all of Europe. The same pattern repeated in parts of Latvia, Ukraine, Romania, and elsewhere. Where antisemitic hatred ran deep, local collaborators turned the Holocaust by Bullets into a spectator sport. The groundwork of earlier pogroms made entire communities active participants rather than reluctant bystanders. This remains one of the darkest truths of the Holocaust: Some of the worst atrocities didn’t require a vast German army. They only required enough locals ready to become the killers themselves — or to cheer them on.
