Football should be about passion, teamwork and community. But this World Cup, @FIFA had other ideas… Tell the @FA to stand up for our sport ➡️ ThisIsntFootball.org #Qatar2022 #ThisIsntFootball

This is good, but feels far more influenced by the Abramovich situation than by Saudi & Qatari takeovers: 👉 No policy on state/proxy ownership 👉 Annual due diligence for Owners? 👉 Human rights abuses based on UK govt sanctions - presumably Saudis & Qataris then pass the test?
Premier League approves updates to Owners and Directors test, including some provisions for human rights as “disqualifying events”

Should obviously be highlighted that the changes they have made are all really needed and should help to keep illicit funds from individuals and businesses from entering the @premierleague.

Huge surprise! A country that doesn't guarantee equal rights for women or the LGBTQ community is an unpopular sponsor for a Women's World Cup where a significant number of players and fans will be LGBTQ . justwomenssports.com/reads/f…

This is very sad and a reflection of the unfortunate path football has been allowed to take. Fans now believe the only way their club will win major trophies is if they’re taken over by oil-rich dictatorships.
77% of our viewers this morning on The United Stand wanted Qatar as the next owners of Manchester United.

Incredibly telling that no member of FIFA’s council objected to Saudi Arabia hosting a major tournament. The people who shape the future of football are taking it in a pretty clear direction 💵💵💵

Great statement! Football exists for the fans, not to line the pockets of execs at Europe's elite clubs.

As if the highest paid individual at any football club in the country is a lawyer.
Man City turns to lawyer Lord Pannick to challenge the Premier League case against them and @TheLawyermag says he could earn up to £80,000 a day on the case thelawyer.com/man-city-hires…

Good. Finally the Premier League are standing up to the City owners. Over 100 alleged breaches of financial rules since 2009 - insane. #ThisIsntFootball
BREAKING: Man City charged by Premier Leaue with numerous breaches of financial rules following a four-year investigation. This is unprecedented:

Just a few examples of how Man City have brought money in by partnering with companies linked to their owners. Ridiculous that a club can elevate themselves above the rest of the playing field, simply because they're owned by a nation-state, so they can: x.com/Millar_Colin/status/15…

Manchester City's 'record revenues and profits' certainly are "unprecedented". Their rate of striking multi-million deals with UAE-influenced companies is unrivalled, including a betting company (illegal in UAE) with highly dubious authenticity. Welcome to football in 2022.

The work in #Qatar is far from over. The tournament is finished and the public eye is elsewhere, but many of the workers who made the #FIFAWorldCup possible are still owed compensation. We are continuing to put pressure on #Qatar and #FIFA to ensure justice for exploited workers.

This is the obvious progression for Qatar. The World Cup was just the first step. #ThisIsntFootball

For all the great football, this World Cup has been tainted by FIFA’s greed. Abandoning migrant workers can’t be the legacy of #Qatar2022 Tell the FA to take a stand: thisisntfootball.org

It’s been weeks since the last @FA statement on worker compensation. Any update @FAspokesperson on what you have done to push @FIFAcom? The tournament ends this weekend. Time is running out.
Replying to @stevecockburn
The messages accompany an open letter from nearly 40 Nepali rights groups calling on Gianni Infantino to stop dismissing the compensation claims of so many workers who made his tournament possible. See article in @kathmandupost: kathmandupost.com/national/2…

Every day, two thousand Nepalis fly from the Kathmandu airport for overseas jobs. But 3-4 dead bodies arrive at the same airport on average each day. Soon before the World Cup, we witnessed a near-daily scene: the arrival of coffins from Qatar. Our latest: nytimes.com/2022/12/12/sport…

Now England are (sadly) out, threats from FIFA no longer matter. There is no reason the FA can’t start applying real pressure on FIFA to make sure the workers that built this WC are compensated for the abuses they have faced.
If we are summing up the tournament, though, England’s players didn’t use their voice on Qatar. After the armband, there was nothing That isn’t all on them but it’s now the record and it matters as their voice holds weight here independent.co.uk/sport/foot…

It’s difficult to take this interview seriously sitting in a country with a male guardianship system. Obviously English football has A LONG way to go on this issue. But how many women will even be in the stands once the World Cup has left Qatar? @HerGameToo
