Honestly, we need to institute strict safeguarding measures around male doctors in pediatric and women’s medicine. No male of any position should ever be allowed to be alone in a room with children or women without a woman present, and always, always a family member.

Men trading in women is one of patriarchy’s main staples. It is so old a practice that it figures in our fairytales and our religions - and certainly in today’s millions of female slaves. End men trading in women and we end patriarchy.

Disagree. Surrogacy is ethically straightforward, much in the way prostitution is ethically straightforward. It is commodification and exploitation of women, reducing women to “things” for rent or purchase. Women will never attain full humanity as long as these practices exist.

I would add that the origins and main intent of war is rape. Men’s rape raids were the first instances of coalitionary male violence in human history.

This is a human rights crime.

If women left the workforce the entire economy would collapse. Women leaving the workforce is a dead end fantasy with no basis in reality.

Porn is what the end of the world looks like. Porn culture is when all morality is measured by the dowsing rod of men's erections. When police, teachers, judges, and lawyers, are ejaculating to images of women being choked, flogged, and bound. Then, the ethics of male sexuality is cut loose by sadistic pornography, so that our measure of morality is based on the increasingly depraved abuse that makes men hard. Liberal politics for the past several decades have followed the immoral compass of erections in nearly every policy that pertains to women. Sex trafficking? We'll call it sex work, and if you say otherwise, you're a bigot. Women who are harmed and speak out? Shut up. Pornography? We'll call it free speech, and if you talk about any of its harms, you're a bigot. Even when we know, and can see, that porn is visibly, emotionally, physically harming children. Transgenderism? If men pretending to be women gives them an erection, and allows them access to spaces where women and children are naked and vulnerable, opposing that makes you a prude, a bigot, and a Nazi. "Liberal feminism" has unfortunately become lumped together as ALL feminism, in a kind of historical amnesia, despite the centuries of history behind it which opposed the sex trafficking of women. The dick was not always the dowsing rod, and erections are not a moral compass. For women, current liberal politics are exactly that, and we can speak ad nauseam about the harms of the sex industry, porn - even how it harms men - and be called bigots for it, because the measure of morality, for liberal women who claim to be feminists, goes only as far as the measure of a man's pleasure. It's a depressing state of affairs.

The manufacturing plants and raw materials that make this massive business possible are women's bodies, and the products being bought and sold are human babies. This hugely profitable industry can only exist if a subset of women offer themselves up for highly invasive, completely unnatural, risky, and life-altering medical procedures resulting in pregnancy and birth, or alternatively “egg-harvesting” - all with little to no legal protection or oversight. What motivates women to become surrogate mothers? What motivates women to have their eggs extracted for other women to “use”? What and who are the drivers behind the normalization of surrogacy? We know that money plays a big part, both for the surrogate mothers and to the chain of people who profit from this human trade - the surrogacy agencies, doctors, clinics, hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry - what we might call Big Fertility - but there are other factors at play besides money. Lexi has been investigating surrogacy and campaigned against surrogacy law reform in the UK for 7 years, where commercial surrogacy is still illegal but "altruistic" surrogacy is getting more and more common. In her work to raise awareness around the mountains of ethical questions surrounding the practice of surrogacy in the UK and internationally, Lexi works closely with survivors of surrogacy and in this episode we get an inside view of the world of surrogate motherhood and the dangerously murky morality that surrogate mothers navigate on their often harrowing “journeys”. We talk about how toxic empathy, low self-esteem and needing to prove you are a good person can lead some women to offer up their bodies for use. We talk about so-called reproductive privilege, the idea that “aren't you lucky you can do this without any help, you don't have to go to an IVF clinic, and you really should help other people who don't have the same luck as you” as well as the adoption of human rights language such as Wombs Without Borders, “humanitarian surrogacy” and “fertility refugees”.
