(Lays out as the crowd goes bonkers) Alec Martinez has won the #StanleyCup for the Los Angeles Kings!!! (Lays out) Alec Martinez on the rebound! (Lays out)…and ROYALTY REIGNS AGAIN IN THE NHL!” Comments from soon-to-be (the next year) @HockeyHallFame PxP #NickNickson at around 9:30pm PT (the game started at 5) as #GoKingsGo defeated #NYR 3-2 in 2OT (14:43 5th) to win the series (and the Cup) 4-1. (Full disclosure - this reporter was at this game - the first and only time seeing a Cup awarded in person - and at all of the Kings’ home playoff games.) Whereas the Cup run in 2012 (which ended two days ago on June 11) was relatively drama free (L.A. led all 4 series 3-0), the 2014 run was anything but… It started with the 3rd meeting in 4 postseasons against division rival #TheFutureIsTeal. San Jose took a 3-0 series lead on a Game 3 overtime shot…a Game 3 that tv announcers #BobMiller and @JimFox19 said was the best game the team had played of the three. Everyone knew the next stat - only 3 teams in NHL history had come back from down 0-3 to win a series: 1942 #LeafsForever; 1975 #Isles, and the 2010 #IgniteTheOrange. Two players from that Flyers team (Jeff Carter and Mike Richards) were on the 2010 team that did it. And they were on the 2014 Kings team that did it. In professional sports, only 5 teams have come from down 0-3 to win…these four, and the 2004 #RedSox against the #Yankees. Never in the NBA, although one team did come back from down 1-3 in a Finals to win - and friend @Rjeff24 was part of it 10 years ago. But I digress. Round 2 - the first (and to date, only) postseason matchup against crosstown rival #FlyTogether. The Kings won the first two on the road, lost the next 2 at home…and Game 5 in Anaheim, before winning the next two to take the series in 7…and end Teemu Selanne’s great career. Six elimination games for the Kings…in just the first two rounds… Next, a rematch against the defending champion #Blackhawks…who took out the Kings the year prior when Los Angeles was defending champion. After losing Game 1, Los Angeles won 3 straight…but as Coach Darryl Sutter had said in the previous Cup run, “you don’t get nothin’ for three”… They didn’t. Chicago forced it to Game 7 at @UnitedCenter, and the OT game winner was the same man who would clinch the Cup Final - @amartinez_27. He joined a select group of players to score the conference clinching goal and the Cup-clinching goal in the same season. On to the Final, where again Los Angeles led 3-0…Game 1 was one OT; Games 2 (and 5) were double OT. @JustinWilliams was awarded the #ConnSmythe and captain @DustinBrown23 hoisted the Cup first, again. Game 6 of this year’s Final - Sunday at @TMobileArena.
