The white supremacist who fatally shot 23 people & hurt 22 others in my hometown at an El Paso Walmart will spend the rest of his life in jail after being sentenced to 90 life sentences. The shooter parroted the rhetoric many across the right wing have used in their anti-immigrant stances. It impacted my family. My aunt survived the shooting, but we will never forget. This was one of the darkest days of my entire career. It was a living hell to work on this shooting while serving as Penceβs homeland security advisor in the Trump White House & breaking down the facts to the WH National Security Advisor that this was a full-blown white supremacist attack targeting Latinos. Iβll never forget Penceβs reaction when he faced me. They knew the ugliness they had emboldened. The broader movement of this is ongoing. The Republican Party went from President George W. Bush, who paints immigrant portraits to celebrate their contributions & who has often said, βWe can be a secure nation & a welcoming one at the same time,β to a fear-mongering anti-immigrant GOP platform full of personalities that perpetuate such attacks. May today's sentencing be a haunting reminder to them of their words' tragic, horrific reality.
