We may argue politely, we may argue humanely, we may argue with great mutual benefit: but, obviously, we must argue.

Exclusive from @oliver_wright Dartmoor ponies could be subject to mass culling to reduce the impact on biodiversity after a controversial ruling by the government’s environmental quango Natural England has demanded that all livestock grazing on the moor is reduced by about 75 per cent to protect other habitats, plants and species The move looks set to result in the culling of up to nine in ten of the semi-wild ponies as farmers prioritise their own cattle and sheep to remain within Natural England’s limit to minimise the impact on their own livelihoods Natural England argued that the move was necessary to protect the diversity of Dartmoor, which is a designated site of special scientific interest However, the plan goes against a government commissioned review into the future of Dartmoor, published two years ago, which concluded that Natural England “should not take actions likely to result in a reduction in pony numbers”, adding they were “invaluable for conservation grazing” The move has led to claims that the quango is acting as judge, jury and executioner of the ponies — a species which is itself seen as endangered Dartmoor ponies could be put to death under biodiversity plans thetimes.com/article/ba529f3…

Time for the MPs misled by its promoters in the last session to vote to end the Bill’s life
The decision of Lauren Edwards MP to reintroduce the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill ensures that the vital conversation on how we can do better for dying people can continue

I refuse to believe New Street station was ever designed, but, rather like the Labour Party, its confusing layout can just about be understood if you spend enough time wandering in its labyrinthine underbelly.
Without doubt, Birmingham New Street is the most confusing station in the country. Whoever designed it should consider another, entirely different, career.

To be fair Reform are the last party that can complain about "splitting the vote" etc given that they were responsible for dozens of extra Labour MP's winning their seats at the last election by siphoning votes away from the Tories. Live by the sword, die by the sword I guess.
Exclusive from @patrickkmaguire Restore Britain is set to hand Andy Burnham the victory in Makerfield, according to a poll of the constituency that will electrify the final days of the by-election campaign. The mayor of Greater Manchester is five points ahead of Reform UK in a race that remains too close for comfort with less than a week until ballots are cast, a survey by More in Common and the UCL Policy Lab suggests. It shows Labour’s lead over Nigel Farage’s candidate, Robert Kenyon — 45 per cent to 40 per cent — is smaller than the 8 per cent share for Restore Britain, the hard-right party led by Rupert Lowe, with more than one in ten voters yet to decide how to vote. thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

When the @Nat_Mem_Arb was about to close down due to an unpaid six figure VAT debt, I met the then Treasury Minister, JOHN HEALEY, to ask that the debt be written off. Within 2 weeks he had written off that debt enabling @PoppyLegion to take over the enterprise and be the glory that it is today. Thank you, John.

Was “what happened” with Al Carns resignation, that he was offered Minister of Defence and realised he would be a sacrificial lamb? Or that he was told the job would go to Dan Jarvis?

One of the greatest films of all time and yet… Churchill wanted propaganda and what the public got in Blimp was great art that still embodied perfectly why we were at war and why we would win
A summary of the script of "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" (1943) found its way to Prime Minister Winston Churchill before the movie began production. He wrote to Minister of Information Brenden Bracken, "Pray propose to me the measures necessary to stop this foolish production before it gets any further." Bracken was uncomfortable with Churchill's request, and responded that he had "no power to supress the film", stating that "in order to stop it the government would need to assume powers of a very far-reaching kind". Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger wanted Laurence Olivier to play the lead role of Clive Candy in the movie. But Olivier was prevented from being furloughed from the Navy by Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Churchill didn't want to bolster the production with an actor and star of Olivier's caliber, as he felt the movie was critical of a type of British patriot. Olivier was allowed to take a leave from the Navy to make a film about William Shakespeare's patriotic King Henry V in Henry V (1944). Roger Livesey was cast instead. After the proposal to release Laurence Olivier was turned down by the War Office, Michael Powell asked the Minister Jack Beddington "Do you forbid us to make the film?" He replied, "Oh, my dear fellow, after all, we are a democracy, aren't we? You know we can't forbid you to do anything, but don't make it, because everyone will be really cross, and the Old Man [Winston Churchill] will be very cross and you'll never get a knighthood." Filming was made difficult by the wartime shortages and by Winston Churchill's objections leading to a ban on the production crew having access to any military personnel or equipment. But they still managed to "find" quite a few Army vehicles and plenty of uniforms. In his autobiography, Michael Powell wrote, "I have often been asked how we managed to obtain military vehicles, military uniforms, weapons and all the fixings after being refused help by the War Office and the Ministry of Information. The answer is quite simple: we stole them." ("The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp: The war film that Churchill tried to ban", Mark Allison, BBC, 2023, "A Life in Movies", Michael Powell, 1986 & IMDb) P.S: On this day, 83 years ago, Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger's "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" (1943) premiered in London, UK.
