The powerful animal tranquilizer, xylazine, is being detected more often in the illegal drug supply, but it's fentanyl that's killing opioid users, experts warn. @JMPerroneMD discusses the drug and its effect on patients with opioid use disorder. @NBCNews spr.ly/6011P17fB

The problem is that the people who want treatment often cannot find it, afford it, get to it easily, and fit it into their lives. Sometimes they will need multiple shots at it. Meanwhile, people who need food, housing, sleep, and community are told they need treatment first.

Must be careful with our messaging to public. Xylazine is almost always present with fentanyl. OD should still be tx with naloxone. Enough reversal of opioid likely enough to restore breathing & consciousness. Give Narcan.@DrGupta46 @JMPerroneMD @PennAnesthesia @PennMedicine

Naloxone is short acting. That’s a good thing. Withdrawal will pass quickly. When naloxone wears off, we can give more if we need to. I have been treating opioid overdoses for nearly two decades, and I have never, ever thought we needed a long-acting reversal agent.
Newly approved nalmefene nasal spray lasts for several hours longer than naloxone, which means that difficult-to-treat withdrawal also lasts longer. apnews.com/article/overdose-…
